Forest Settlement and Village History

Borcuchy originated in the 18th century as a forest settlement of tar makers; the village was associated with the estates of Sienno. At the beginning of the 19th century, Borcuchy was still a forest settlement. Its forest setting was therefore part of both its origins and its character as a settlement at the start of the following century. The reference to tar making also gives the village’s early history an occupational dimension, while its connection to Sienno identifies the estates as another historical context. Together, these offer three distinct aspects: the forest location, the work of the tar makers and the relationship with the estates of Sienno.

In 1862, the farming village of Borcuchy had one house, three pigsties, an inn and twelve farmers’ cottages. Compared with the earlier accounts of the settlement’s character, this gives us a quantified picture of its buildings. The twelve farmers’ cottages stood alongside three pigsties and one house and inn each; the figures bring the different groups within the village structure into focus. For travelers interested in the development of rural settlements, two historical perspectives can therefore be considered side by side: the village’s origins and character as a settlement, on the one hand, and its buildings in 1862, on the other.
