Pińczów brings together the Nida River and a landscape where protected areas, steppe grasslands and historic places are part of Ponidzie. When planning your trip, the town offers a range of starting points: you can consider a seasonal ride on the Ciuchcia Express Ponidzie, cycling tours, water sports and cultural history. Hotels in Pińczów can help you decide which of these aspects of the region is especially interesting for your stay.

Water, cycling route and seasonal railway

Pińczów lies on the banks of the Nida. On the Pińczów Reservoir, you can go out by canoe, pedal boat, sailboat or motorboat. Cyclists can follow the “Madonnas of Ponidzie” route, which starts and ends in Pińczów. It is marked with a green bicycle symbol and recommended for family trips; it is also considered suitable for children and seniors. This gives you a concrete starting point if you would like to explore Pińczów by bicycle.

Cycling is also popular here, but you can also take in the landscape from the perspective of a railway journey: since 1992, the Ciuchcia Express Ponidzie has operated as a seasonal summer attraction. The ride passes fields and meadows, the Nida floodplains and the Pińczów Hills. It also takes in a loess landscape cut through by ravines and steppe grasslands. The railway journey brings together several characteristic landscapes of Ponidzie.

Another way to get to know the area through a particular theme is the “Pińczów–Skowronno” nature and geology educational trail. It runs through the Nadnidziański Landscape Park and is about seven kilometres long.

Landscape and nature in Ponidzie

In Pińczów County, almost the entire area is covered by various forms of protection as part of the Ponidzie Landscape Parks Complex. The Skotniki Górne Nature Reserve, part of which lies in Pińczów municipality in Pińczów County, offers a specific glimpse of these special habitats. It protects a section of a gypsum slope with xerothermic grasslands and steppe insects. The reference to the geological substrate and the habitats associated with it adds to the landscape you see on the Ciuchcia ride.

Pińczów also has a special connection with aviation for those interested in flying and gliding. The Pińczów Aeroclub was founded in January 1994 and is the only aeroclub in Poland specializing in microlight aviation. Its certified SLR “AEROKRAK” paragliding school provides paragliding and hang-gliding training at all levels. This adds an activity to the options that is quite different from cycling, water and landscape trails.

Chapel, monastery and regional history

For a cultural and historical walk, head to the northern part of the town to find the Chapel of St. Anne on Klasztorne Hill, also known as St. Anne’s Hill. Nearby are the remains of 17th-century fortifications and two stone figures dating from the 19th century. Several periods of history come together here at a place with a name.

In the centre, the Baroque bell tower stands at the northeastern corner of the market square, now called Plac Wolności. It belongs to the former Pauline monastery, which is now part of a parish complex. The Wielopolski Palace preserves another trace of the town’s history: it was built around 1789, and its interior retains a Neoclassical polychrome decoration. The Regional Museum in Pińczów takes the story beyond individual buildings. Its collections come mainly from Ponidzie and document the region’s traditions, history and culture from earliest times to the present day.

You can get to know Pińczów according to your interests—through its landscapes, activities or history, from the seasonal railway and cycling route to the chapel, bell tower, palace and museum.
