Churches and their architectural history
St. Jacek’s Church was built between 1617 and 1620 and consecrated by Bishop T. Oborski on 10 July 1633. It belongs to the former Dominican monastery in Klimontów, whose architecture combines late Gothic, Mannerist and early Baroque forms. The church interior is decorated in the Baroque and Rococo styles. The construction period, consecration and architectural vocabulary offer different points of reference for exploring the town’s history through its sacred buildings.
St. Jacek’s Church also houses a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary, dating from the first third of the 15th century. The collegiate Church of St. Joseph offers a different architectural point of reference: it resembles St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The synagogue and its architectural details
The synagogue is the only surviving material remnant of the former Jewish community in the landscape around Klimontów. It is not generally used. Behind its Ionic portico are two transverse stairways leading to the women’s gallery. A partition between the main hall, vestibule and women’s gallery has also been preserved. These details give the synagogue its own architectural layout and distinguish it from the town’s churches.
Local history and landscape
Klimontów was founded around 1240 by Klemens, the Castellan of Kraków; the town’s name derives from his. Wiktor (Bruno) Jasieński was also born in Klimontów. The landscape around the town is shaped by a very dense network of loess valleys and ravines, which complement the Koprzywianka Valley. The Jarmark na św. Jacka is held annually from 15 to 17 August. The exact dates of future editions may vary, so check the dates for the relevant edition before your trip. The tourist information office is located at the Public Municipal Library, Krakowska 19 in Klimontów. It provides information about sacred and secular architectural monuments in the municipality. As location details may change, it is advisable to check them locally before your visit.
