Old Town and Rynek: a historic town plan
The historic centre of the Old Town has a Renaissance layout and is almost square. At each corner, two streets run at right angles to one another. This clearly defined layout offers a way to explore the town’s history: you can look at the plan of the centre and relate it to the buildings around the Rynek. The townhouses there date from the 18th century.
The Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument also stands on the Rynek. It was erected in 1864 and later moved several times, so its history is also a story of changing locations. Another detail of the town’s history concerns the town hall: Count Alfred Potocki donated a clock for its tower in 1825. These two dates offer different points of interest as you look at historic buildings and the changes they have undergone on a walk.
The Church of św. Bartłomieja and its building history
The Gothic Church of św. Bartłomieja was built of stone and brick in 1342–1343. Inside is a fresco depicting Saint Bartholomew flayed. Attached to the church is the Kaplica Matki Boskiej Różańcowej, also known as Kaplica Tęczyńskich. Katarzyna z Leszczyńskich Tęczyńska had it built between 1610 and 1625; it serves as a tomb mausoleum for her husband and son.
The brick bell tower beside the church is also part of its architectural setting. It was built in 1825 in the Neoclassical style. The church, chapel and tower represent different architectural and historical periods: the church dates back to the 14th century, the chapel to the early 17th century and the bell tower to the 19th century. Together, these buildings and their respective dates of construction offer a way to explore the town’s history.
Golejów: forest trails and routes nearby
The Golejów forest area is about 3 km from Staszów. It has numerous forest trails and logging roads for walks, hikes and bike rides. Along the way, you can pick mushrooms and berries, including blackberries and raspberries. The range of options lets you plan according to whether you would rather explore on foot or by bike.
An unmarked hiking and cycling route starts at the Golejów recreation centre and leads to Rytwiany. Check local conditions before setting out. There is also a circular route through Staszów and the nearby Golejów forests, which opened in November 2021. When choosing a route, different details can be useful: for one, you know the start and destination, while the other is described as a loop through Staszów and the forests.
The “Golejów” nature and landscape complex is also located within the boundaries of Staszów. It includes a stand of pine and oak trees that is over 140 years old. The complex is a distinct natural feature within the town, while the nearby forest area offers the trails and route options mentioned above. Together, they provide different perspectives on the landscape around Staszów and within the town itself.
Park, exercise and summer events
The Adama Bienia Park in Staszów has walking paths, a playground and outdoor fitness equipment provided by the town. It offers a place for a walk, a playground and an opportunity to exercise outdoors, all in one location. So alongside the options in the nearby forest area, there is also somewhere to spend time outdoors within the town.
