Kozarzyn’s local history is closely connected with the early development of mills and industry. The settlement consists of three farmsteads; at the same time, Kozarzyn was once an industrial settlement adjoining Smolary. Both time periods are interesting for understanding the place: its present-day settlement structure and its historical role as an industrial site.

Industrial History Since the Early 19th Century

Between 1831 and 1832, Selig Salamon built an oil mill, a sawmill and a steam-powered mill in Kozarzyn. The first steam engine in Greater Poland was installed in this steam-powered mill. The three facilities represent different industrial sectors that came together in Kozarzyn. The operation was also designed for high output: Salamon’s company ran around the clock, and modern equipment enabled large-scale production.

The processing figures make the different operating scales tangible. The seasonal daily milling capacity was 70 centners. This is distinct from the processing carried out at the oil mill: it processed 25 tonnes of oilseeds in autumn. The first figure describes the milling capacity per day during the season; the second, the amount of oilseeds processed in autumn. Together, they paint a picture of a company in which milling and industrial production played an important role.

Local History and Architectural Heritage

Another historic building in Kozarzyn is Dom Młynarza, a house built around 1908 that is now used as a residence. It is included in the municipal monument register of Szamocin. The approximate date places the house in a different phase of local history from the mills built in the early 19th century.

Kozarzyn is also home to a disused 19th-century Protestant cemetery. The residential building and the cemetery represent different traces of the past: one is a house still used as a residence, the other a former burial site. Together with the industrial past, they provide several chronological and thematic points of reference for the local history.

Cycling Routes, Meadows and Swimming Spots in the Szamocin Municipality

Beyond Kozarzyn, the Szamocin municipality offers other options for planning your trip. Ten marked cycling routes with a total length of 163.5 kilometres are designated in forest areas. The approximately 20-kilometre cycling route “Przyroda i człowiek” (Nature and People) passes through forests, parks and avenues. It leads to historic buildings, memorials, religious and secular sites, as well as natural monuments.

Another type of tour is the driving route “Najbliższe Okolice Szamocina” (The Immediate Surroundings of Szamocin), which is listed as 40 or 50 kilometres long. This makes it possible to compare two different scales: an approximately 20-kilometre cycling route and a longer driving route whose length is given as two possible figures. The meadows in the Noteć Valley are home to 115 bird species within the municipality, adding a landscape perspective to the historical and architectural themes.

Swimming spots are also listed at the municipal level. Swimming options include the bathing area at Lake Siekiera and the beach at Laskowo, which has a WOPR lifeguard station. These places, the cycling routes and the Noteć meadows are in the Szamocin municipality; the history of the mills, Dom Młynarza and the cemetery relate to Kozarzyn itself. When planning your trip, this distinction helps you consider local history separately from nature and activities across the municipality.
