Łowyń lies on Lake Łowyńskie in a depression in the moraine uplands. Church and memorial sites

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Łowyń was built in 1927. A black stone plaque was unveiled in its vestibule on 15 August 2002, the 75th anniversary of the church’s construction. It commemorates participants in the Greater Poland Uprising, soldiers who fought for freedom and independence, and three local priests who were tortured to death at the Nazi camp in Dachau. The date of the unveiling connects the church’s construction history with a later act of remembrance.

The parish cemetery is home to the grave of Łukasz Kulik, who came from Pakosław. The private was wounded during the uprising operations in January 1919 and murdered by Germans at the local railway station. The concrete monument erected in 1924 was replaced by a stone plaque and a black granite headstone. The headstone is decorated with a crowned eagle, a crossed rifle and a sabre. The memorial was consecrated on 17 January 1996. While the plaque in the church vestibule commemorates several groups, the grave monument records the fate of a named private.

Historical traces and routes

Another historical trace is the mill built in Łowyń before 1912. It was probably a post mill dating from the 18th or 19th century. It was in operation until 1939. The mill’s history adds another aspect of the town’s former life to its church memorial sites.

The R-1 International Cycle Route passes through Łowyń between Lewice and Gorzyń; near Gorzyń, it meets National Road 24. This places Łowyń on a named section of the cycle route. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the current route before setting out.

Another tourist route starts in Stare Osieczno and runs via Sowia Góra, Międzychód, Zatom Stary, Ławica, Chalin, Prusim, Kamionna, the “Dolina Kamionki” nature reserve and Mnichy to Łowyń. From there, it continues via Nowe Gorzycko to Wierzbno. On this route, Łowyń is at kilometre 51.1 and Wierzbno at kilometre 68.6. This provides different reference points for planning: a connection explicitly identified as a cycle route and a longer sequence of places with kilometre markers.
