Międzychód: Lake, Warta and historical traces

Międzychód lies on an isthmus between a lake and the Warta River. Water and local history together shape the town’s character: a promenade runs around Jezioro Miejskie, while narrow lanes lead from the market square to the lake or the Warta. Other features include an unusual artesian spring, historic grave slabs and routes connecting Międzychód with destinations in the surrounding area. Between the lake, river and local routes

The town’s location on the isthmus provides its geographical orientation: the lake and river lie on opposite sides of the town. The narrow lanes, known as “gaskami,” lead from the market square to the lake or the Warta. These small connecting routes are distinct features of the townscape, alongside the promenade around Jezioro Miejskie.

Tourist routes also pass through Międzychód or continue from it. The “Szlakiem sławnych międzychodzian” route runs through the town. Another tourist route connects Międzychód with Skwierzyna on the north bank of the Warta; it starts at the bridge in Międzychód. This is separate from the red hiking trail from Międzychód to Kamionna, which passes through the nearby “Kolno Międzychodzkie” forest reserve.

Spring, park and lakeshore

A special attraction is the “Laufpompa”: an artesian spring enclosed in a decorative cast-iron pump. Its water rises from a depth of about 90 metres. The spring’s smell and healing properties are characteristic of it. This spot is quite different from the routes and lakeshore that shape Międzychód’s landscape.

Tietza Park is also located by the lake. Its features include a wooden sculpture and a stone bearing a portrait based on a surviving photograph. Together with the promenade around Jezioro Miejskie, the park forms another distinct focal point by the water: here, the artworks take centre stage, while the promenade follows a route around the lake.

Old Town and historical traces

The urban layout of Międzychód’s Old Town is noteworthy. You can find a specific historical connection at the Kościół pw. Niepokalanego Serca Najśw. Marii Panny church. Historic grave slabs commemorating townspeople from the 17th and 18th centuries are set into the surrounding wall. The vestibule also contains the grave slab of Krzysztof Unruh, the town’s owner in the 17th century. These two locations offer different perspectives: the slabs in the wall commemorate townspeople, while the slab in the vestibule commemorates a former owner.

The Regional Museum is located at ul. 17 Stycznia 100. When planning your trip, you can consider the Old Town’s layout, the grave slabs and the museum as different points of historical interest, rather than seeing the town only in terms of its waterside location.

Kolno Międzychodzkie Forest Reserve

The “Kolno Międzychodzkie” forest reserve lies a short distance east of Międzychód. Established in 1959, it covers 14.77 hectares. The reserve is located between Lakes Koleńskie and Kludno, in the municipality of Międzychód. Its precise location and designated area make it a distinct nature destination alongside the lake and the Warta in town.
