Kaszczor – Churches, Windmills and Trails
Accommodation in Kaszczor
Kaszczor combines a setting among hills and forests with historic buildings and marked trails. The town on the Młynówka Kaszczorska offers various starting points for a trip to Poland: you can include the landscape, churches and outdoor activities in your plans. A reconstructed observation tower offers panoramic views of Kaszczor and the surrounding area.
Landscape and Trails Around Kaszczor
Hills, forests and the Młynówka Kaszczorska River define the town’s setting. The observation tower adds a view of Kaszczor and its surroundings to this impression of the landscape. If you are planning a stay, you can make the view a destination in its own right and combine it with the town’s other attractions, rather than focusing your visit solely on historic buildings.
The yellow-marked hiking trail runs from Wieleń through Kaszczor, Śmieszkowo and Sława and is 14.4 kilometres long in total. In Kaszczor, it crosses the Młynówka Kaszczorska and passes the listed Church of St. Wojciech. The stated distance refers to the entire trail. Keep the 14.4 kilometres in mind when planning your day if you would like to include this hiking trail in your trip.
For cycling, there is the Szlak Kaszczorski, an 18.8-kilometre cycle route. It runs from Wieleń through Kaszczor, Mochy and Biała Góra and back to Wieleń. Its route therefore differs from that of the yellow-marked hiking trail, which goes through Śmieszkowo to Sława. Kaszczor can also be reached from Wieleń via a safe, one-kilometre cycle link.
Churches and History
The Church of St. Wojciech is a late Baroque building constructed between 1764 and 1777. It was built on the site of a wooden church dating from the late 16th century. Its furnishings include a main altar with a Renaissance crucifix from the second half of the 16th century. A Baroque sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from 1745, also stands by the church. These individual objects reflect different periods in the local history of the church.
Another landmark in the town’s history is the former Protestant church. The building was restored in 2011 and now serves as a gallery and concert hall. In Kaszczor, you will encounter various church buildings with different historical associations and present-day functions. Kaszczor was also the first seat of the Cistercian monastery in the 13th century.
Windmills as Another Discovery
Kaszczor is home to two wooden post mills, dating from 1859 and 1761. The second mill is one kilometre east of the first. This relative location helps you find your way between the two buildings: the older of the two mills lies east of the other. Together, they add another aspect of local history to the churches and trails. If you would like to explore Kaszczor through its different themes, you can make the windmills a focus of interest alongside the landscape, churches and marked routes.
