Zelków: Karst Pond, Chapels and Trails

An oval square and a pond at its center define the historic heart of Zelków. This scene gives the village a clear focal point—and the pond also tells the story of its landscape and history. There are also chapels, a monument and trails leading into the surrounding area. A karst spring in the heart of the historic center

The pond is a typical karst spring: a body of water with no outlet, whose basin floor is sealed with clay. Its location in the historic center brings a distinctive geological feature together with the village’s character. For centuries, residents used the water mainly for domestic and practical purposes. This everyday importance also made the pond a social hub for the village.

In the Dolina Kluczwody, the landscape reveals another side. The nature reserve protects oak-hornbeam forests, stands of old Carpathian beech forest and the protected Turk’s cap lily. Zelków and its surroundings therefore offer different natural features: a distinctive village pond on the one hand, and protected forests and plants on the other.

Chapels, a monument and Wianki

The village’s history can also be seen in specific landmarks. Zelków has two surviving chapels dating from around the turn of the 20th century. A monument to Saint John Paul II stands beside the school. Along with the pond, these landmarks offer further places to explore the character of the village beyond its landscape.

The Wianki festival is part of community life. It has been held in Zelków for years; in 2026, the XXIII edition of the Wianki festival will take place. Trails through the valley and surrounding area

The small car park at the valley’s lower end, on the Zelków–Biały Kościół road, traditionally serves as a starting point for the middle section of the Wąwóz Zelkowski. There you’ll find tourist information and a designated rest area. A road from Biały Kościół branches off National Road 94 and runs through a section of the gorge towards Dolina Kluczwody.

About 0.5 kilometres from the traditional starting point, a 2-kilometre circular walking trail begins in the Dolina Kluczwody Protected Landscape Area. Check the exact access arrangements locally. Another hiking route connects Wieszczy Dół (Zamkowe Skały), the nature reserve and the Zelków–Biały Kościół road.
