Accommodation in Cisów
Around Cisów are the highest peak of the Cisów range and memorial sites connected to different chapters of Polish history. In the village itself, a special Mass for partisan units is held every year. Landscape of the Cisów Range
Near Cisów lies Włochy, the highest peak of the Cisów range at 429 meters. It is part of the Crown of the Holy Cross Mountains and is about 200 meters from the hiking and touring trail. This makes Włochy a specific landmark in the landscape: the elevation gives the peak’s height, its rank places it within the range, and its designation as part of the Crown of the Holy Cross Mountains establishes its regional context. Memorial Sites from Different Periods
A monument to the insurgents of Rębajło’s unit commemorates the January Uprising of 1863–64. It was erected in the 1930s at the camp site of the January insurgents under the command of Colonel Karol Kalita Rębajło. General Józef Hauke Bosak also stayed there. In 2023, the Insurgents’ Cross was restored at this site; it had already commemorated the insurgents there before the Second World War. The dates refer to different milestones: 1863–64 to the uprising, the 1930s to the erection of the monument, and 2023 to the restoration of the cross.
Another chapter of history is commemorated at Kwart. An obelisk there marks the camp of the Home Army unit “Wybranieccy,” one of the region’s largest partisan units. Partisans under the command of Marian Sołtysiak Barabasz were stationed there in late 1943 and early 1944. Unlike the monument to the January insurgents, this memorial site takes visitors back to the Second World War. The place name Kwart and the names of the unit and its commander give this historical connection a specific context.
Commemoration in Cisów
Every year, veterans’ groups gather at St. Adalbert’s Church in Cisów for a special Mass for the Wybranieccy and other partisan units. The name Wybranieccy connects this annual commemoration with the history of the camp at Kwart; the Mass also includes other partisan units. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date in advance.
For historical context, the forms of commemoration are easy to distinguish: both the obelisk at Kwart and the Mass at the church refer to the Wybranieccy. The monument to Rębajło’s unit, by contrast, relates to the January Uprising of 1863–64. This lets you choose between the partisan history of the Second World War and the earlier uprising as distinct historical themes.
