Stream, Waterfall and Mineral Springs
Łomnica-Zdrój stretches for 9 km along the Łomniczanka stream, a right-bank tributary of the Poprad. The stream is therefore a defining geographical feature of the village. The waterfall is in the upper part of Łomnica-Zdrój, in the Martyniaki settlement, east of the road through the village. Several mineral springs with tapped outlets lie below the waterfall and are used by residents and tourists. The waterfall and springs are thus part of the same landscape, but each has its own character: the waterfall on the stream, and the tapped spring outlets below it.
The protected status also identifies specific natural features. Since 1973, a 50 m stretch of the Łomniczanka stream has been protected as an inanimate natural monument. This includes the rocky ledge with the waterfall, the banks and the mineral springs. Two inanimate nature reserves established in Łomnica-Zdrój in 1998 are separate from this: the Stanisław spring and a sandstone rock. These designations cover different scales, from a named stretch of stream to two individually designated protected sites.
Hiking Route and Timing
Łomnica-Zdrój lies on the 19 km hiking route from Łabowa to Piwniczna-Zdrój PKP. The stated walking time is 7 hours. This makes the route a hike in its own right, rather than just a short addition to your plans. Pierogi and Regional Traditions
Pierogi łomniczańskie are a regional dish made with potatoes and cheese. The recipe has been passed down from generation to generation for more than a hundred years. The pierogi are served on occasions including christenings and weddings, as well as at Christmas and Easter. These occasions show how the dish is associated with several celebrations, not just one date in the year.
The annual Pieróg Łomnicoński Festival celebrates the culinary tradition. Its program includes traditional pierogi and regional specialities, as well as concerts, artistic performances, children’s activities, workshops, competitions and stalls run by local exhibitors. The festival program therefore goes beyond food, bringing together different kinds of cultural and event offerings. Another cultural trace can be found on the mountain pastures: remains of traditional pastoral farming, in the form of “chałpiny” (shepherds’ huts), have been preserved there.
