Cycling Routes and Peat-Bog Landscape
The Trail Around the Tatras and Velo Dunajec both pass through Nowy Targ. These two named routes give cyclists a specific point of reference when choosing a destination. If you prefer to explore the area on foot, Bór na Czerwonem Nature Reserve has an educational trail: a 170-metre-long wooden boardwalk crosses the peat bog and ends at a viewing platform. From there, you can see the Tatra and Gorce Mountains. Cycling and the peat-bog landscape offer different focuses—a choice between rides on two routes and a nature experience along the educational trail.
Hiking Trails with Different Starting Points
Two marked trails start in different districts of Nowy Targ. The green trail leads from Oleksówki to the PTTK mountain hut on Turbacz. The blue-marked trail connects Kowaniec with the Koliba on Łapsowa Polana. The named starting points and destinations help you distinguish between the trails; each colour marks a separate route.
In the wider Nowotarski destination area, the green trail leads from Oleksówki to the PTTK mountain hut; it is approximately 7.5 kilometres long and takes about three hours. Also in Nowotarski, a yellow trail leads from Oleksówki to the hut; its ascent is gentle and wide. The Pope’s Chapel is on this route. It was built in 1979, before Pope John Paul II visited Nowy Targ.
Also in the wider Nowotarski destination area, the trail from Kowaniec leads to Koliba na Łapsowej Polanie; it is about 1.5 kilometres long, and the ascent takes approximately 25 minutes. The trail is a gentle family hike. At the Koliba, visitors can enjoy views of the Tatra Mountains, overnight accommodation and a meal. This gives you hiking options of different lengths, with clearly named destinations, to consider when planning your trip.
Printmaking, Gallery and Architectural History
The Printing Museum offers an insight into printing techniques, art, traditions and the history of Nowy Targ and the wider region. A visit focused on this subject can be planned differently from time spent on the trails: here, printing and cultural history take centre stage. The JATKI Art Gallery began exhibiting in September 1991 with works by artists from Nowy Targ. The date and first exhibition provide a specific connection between the gallery’s history and the town.
Among the historic buildings is U Borzanka, an inn with a carriage house dating from the late 18th century. The building was constructed from dressed stone and bricks, then plastered. A portico supported by two round columns and a shingle roof define its described architecture. This architectural history offers a distinct glimpse into the local past, whether you shape your trip around culture, nature or activity.
A Local Ice-Cream Tradition
Traditional ice cream from well-known outlets in the town centre is considered a Nowy Targ tradition.
