Zaskale: Trails, Culture and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Zaskale
Two aspects are especially useful when planning a trip to Zaskale: trails that pass through the village and a local cultural history featuring a church, an ensemble and events. The tourist Kazimierz-Przerwa-Tetmajer Trail passes through Zaskale; the Trail Around the Tatras also runs through the village. There are also historical connections, regional cuisine and community festivals. This makes it easy to consider Zaskale in terms of planned activities and cultural interests.
Hiking and cycling routes through Zaskale
The tourist Kazimierz-Przerwa-Tetmajer Trail runs from Szaflary through Ludźmierz, Krauszów, Dział and Pieniążkowice to the summit of Zeleźnica. Zaskale lies along this route. The sequence of places gives you a specific reference for planning a hike that extends beyond the village to a named summit. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.
The Trail Around the Tatras also runs through Zaskale. A developed 35 km section runs on the Polish side from Nowy Targ through Zaskale, Rogoźnik, Stare Bystre, Czarny Dunajec and Podczerwone to the state border. On the Slovak side, the route continues through Suchá Góra, Głodówka and Lasek to Trstená. In winter, the named routes serve as cross-country ski trails. Compared with the Tetmajer Trail, the focus here is on the length of the developed section, its continuation across the border and its winter use; for the hiking trail, the sequence of places leading to Zeleźnica is the specific point of reference.
Church history and the ensemble
In 1987, Pope John Paul II consecrated the cornerstone of St. Wojciech's Church in Zaskale. The ensemble “Mali Zaskalanie,” which began its activities at the primary school in Zaskale in 1990, offers another historical connection to local culture. Its performances at community events included Zoskalańskie Jodełko, Opłatek Wiejski and the family festival in Zaskale.
“Mali Zaskalanie” also performed elsewhere in the region, including at Przeziyracka Młodyk Toniecnikow i Śpiywokow Góralskich in Ratułów and Papieska Majówka at Bachledówka. These performances extend the local perspective to other event venues in the region.
Regional food and events
At Zoskalańskie Jodełko in Zaskale, guests could sample regional dishes, cakes and cheese in 2018. At the time, the festival was described as a longstanding annual event. At another food event, the 24th Gminny Konkurs Potraw Regionalnych, women cooks from across the Szaflary municipality gathered at the fire station in Zaskale on November 17. The two examples illustrate different aspects: Jodełko focused on giving guests a chance to sample food, while the competition brought women cooks from the municipality together.
Considering Zaskale as a destination
If you are looking for accommodation in Zaskale, you can start by considering the destination in light of your travel interests: would you like to include one of the routes through the village in your plans, or are local culture and food more of a priority? The routes offer different options for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. If you want to plan your stay around a festival, check the date in advance.
