Poronin

Poronin lies at an elevation of 740 to 800 metres above sea level, in a basin between the Pogórze Gliczarowskie and Pogórze Gubałowskie. The Poroniec, Zakopianka and Biały Dunajec rivers flow through the area. Poronin is situated at the confluence of the Zakopianka and Poroniec rivers, at the beginning of the Biały Dunajec, and lies 7 kilometres northeast of Zakopane. Its elevation, basin setting and river courses give you practical points of reference when considering Poronin as a base for your trip.

Regional History and Goral Culture

Since 2015, the School Museum of History and Regional History has been housed in the building of the Legions Polskich Primary School in Poronin. It contains around 800 exhibits on the history of Poronin and Podhale, Goral culture, regionalism, and notable people associated with Poronin. The collection therefore brings together local and regional history with themes of Goral culture. Visits are possible Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you would like to visit the museum at another time, this can be arranged by calling the school management in advance.

Wańkówka is a historic, listed building of architectural, artistic and historical value. It also serves a public function: it houses the Municipal Information Centre, the Municipal Cultural Centre, the municipal library, the Podhalanie Association and the Goral ensemble “Regle”. Wańkówka is also located on a recreational trail that leads from Poronin to Liptovská Kokava via Wołowiec. Here, therefore, listed-building heritage, public facilities and a location on a named trail come together.

Transport and Getting Around

A railway line runs through Poronin. National Road 47 also passes through the village, connecting Zakopane with Kraków. In addition, international road 961 runs here towards the former Polish-Slovak border crossing at Łysa Polana. The road connections can be distinguished by their respective destinations: Zakopane and Kraków are served by National Road 47, while road 961 leads towards Łysa Polana. Together with Poronin’s location northeast of Zakopane, these geographical details can help you place the village on your journey.

Activities and Regional Traditions

A 12-metre-high climbing wall is located on the tower of the Poronin Volunteer Fire Brigade (OSP). It may only be used under the supervision of qualified personnel and by prior appointment; you must bring your own equipment. If you plan this activity, be sure to take the supervision requirement, advance booking and your own equipment into account.

The 51st Poroniańskie Lato was scheduled to take place from 22 to 26 July 2026 on the grounds of the Municipal Cultural Centre in Poronin. The planned programme featured regional traditions: a Goral-style wedding, a competition for the most beautiful braid, and meetings with folk artists. These announced events offer a glimpse into the importance of Goral customs and folk art at the festival.
