Church of Peace: architecture, World Heritage and exhibition
The Church of Peace is a three-aisled basilica with a Greek cross floor plan, built in 1656–1657. Its three-aisled design divides the church interior into a nave and side aisles; the Greek cross floor plan describes the overall cruciform layout. The interior and floor plan thus offer two different points of reference for viewing the architecture. The church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica.” This brings both a clearly recognizable architectural form and its inclusion in a named World Heritage site into focus.
The Church of Peace also houses the exhibition “Faith like a heart of bronze. Treasures of the Church of Peace in Świdnica,” featuring historical objects from the Lutheran church. These include 350-year-old Bibles, paintings, Baroque liturgical vessels, portraits of pastors, prayer books and epitaphs. The collection brings together a variety of objects: Bibles and prayer books point to scripture and prayer, liturgical vessels to worship, and portraits and epitaphs to the commemoration of clergy. Together with its architecture, the exhibition therefore presents the Church of Peace not only through its design but also through objects from church history.
City history in the Old Town Hall
The Museum of Old Trade is located in Świdnica’s Old Town Hall. Its exhibitions focus on the city’s history and trade.
