St. George’s Church: Paintings from Different Centuries

St. George’s Church in Kondratów was first mentioned in written records in 1396. This date provides a chronological reference for the history of the church, but does not automatically mean it was built that year. Conservation work that began in 1992 uncovered the medieval painted decoration. Thus, the church’s history includes two distinct dates: an early written reference and a much later step in uncovering the paintings.

The individual paintings can also be compared chronologically. A painted image of Saint Christopher dates from around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Passion scenes on the north and south walls of the nave, by contrast, are dated to around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries; they are divided into panels. The dates are widely separated. The forms of the images also differ: a single image of a saint on the one hand, and several structured scenes on the other. The Passion refers to the story of Christ’s suffering. The subject, position in the nave, and time period therefore provide clear points of reference for placing the paintings in context. They do not all belong to a single period of creation. The nave is the long main space of a church.

Historic Ornamental Garden and Its Connection to the Residence

The ornamental garden in Kondratów was laid out beside a former Renaissance fortified manor house. Its layout was regular and axial; the historic design created a direct connection to the residence. Axial means that the layout is aligned along a clearly defined axis. Two features can therefore be distinguished when considering the garden: its ordered form and its direct relationship to the residence. This adds another perspective on the historic design of the place to the art history of St. George’s Church.

In the municipality, a walk from Pomocne to Kondratów passes through the agricultural landscape of Lower Silesia and takes about an hour and a half. The walking time is an approximate planning estimate, not an exact arrival time. This means the walk answers a different planning question from the church’s historical dates: it gives a time frame for traveling through a rural setting, while the dates help place the paintings in context.
