Górowski: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Górowski
Górowski County lies in northern Lower Silesia, on the border with the Greater Poland and Lubusz Voivodeships. There are two distinct areas to focus on when exploring Górowski: its landscape and trails, and historic buildings in several towns. You can plan your trip around whether nature watching, cycling and walking routes, or history is your priority. Highlights include both a large landscape protection area and individual churches, a tower and a princely castle.
Landscape and Trails in Górowski
The “Dolina Baryczy” Landscape Protection Area covers parts of the four municipalities of Niechlów, Jemielno, Góra and Wąsosz in Górowski County. It is protected for its importance to tourism and recreation and its diverse ecosystems, and spans 43,350 hectares. The municipalities named give an idea of how widely the area extends across the county.
On the “Bóbr” route, you can observe animals and many plant and tree species. The approximately 48-kilometre route is also used for mushroom picking. Mushroom picking is a seasonal activity, and conditions vary. The “Jastrząb” cycling and walking trail offers a different point of reference: it starts in Góra and runs through Stara Góra, Rogów Górowski, Osetno, Golę Górowską and Jastrzębie. The sequence of place names describes its course, while the “Bóbr” route is chiefly notable for its approximate length and opportunities to observe nature.
The “DZICZEK” route runs from Góra to Ryczeń. It is suitable for walkers and cyclists and is also used by athletes for Nordic walking. The routes therefore differ in the features described: “Jastrząb” is characterized by its starting point and sequence of places, “Bóbr” by its approximate length and opportunities for observation, and “DZICZEK” by the activities for which it is used. These differences can help you choose the focus of an outing based on the activity you have in mind.
Churches, a Castle and Historic Traces
In Góra, the Corpus Christi Church houses a chapel of the “Holy Stairs.” It was a pilgrimage destination in the 18th century. The church’s history probably dates back to the end of the 14th century. The Głogowska Tower also stands in the town: following its revitalization, completed in 2017, it was used as a viewpoint from January 2018 and occasionally served as a venue for exhibitions and displays. If you plan to visit the tower, check the latest opening and access information beforehand.
In Kłoda Górowska, there is a well-preserved 17th-century palace with a moat. The historic complex also includes a fragment of the bridge over the moat with two surviving coats of arms, a burial chapel dating from 1892, and tombstones belonging to the von Gossler family. Each feature offers a different point of interest: the palace and moat, the coats of arms on the bridge, and the burial sites.
The princely castle in Wąsosz lies between the Orla and Barycz rivers and was built in the 14th century. An older commemorative plaque mentions visits by Piast princes from Głogów, Oleśnica and Legnica. Together with the church in Góra, whose history probably dates back to the end of the 14th century, and the palace in Kłoda Górowska, this offers a glimpse of the different historical points of interest in Górowski, without requiring the places to be combined into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
