Marczyce combines mountain scenery with local history. The village lies within two microregions, and is also known for its sweeping views, historic half-timbered buildings, and a blue hiking trail to Góra Grodna. Landscape Between the Valley and the Mountains
The northwestern part of Marczyce, in the direction of Stawy Podgórzyńskie, belongs to Obniżenie Sobieszowskie; the eastern and northeastern parts lie in the Wzgórza Łomnickie. From numerous viewpoints, you can see across the entire Karkonosze Mountains (Giant Mountains), the Jelenia Góra Valley (Hirschberg Valley), Zalew Sosnówka, and Stawy Podgórzyńskie. These views therefore encompass the mountains as well as the valley and nearby bodies of water.
West of Marczyce is a complex of ponds whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. It was created by Cistercian monks from nearby Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój (Bad Warmbrunn). Today, the complex is an important refuge for waterbirds along a migration route. The ponds are a distinctive natural feature in the area around the village; their location west of Marczyce sets them apart from the viewpoints and buildings in the village.
Penitential Crosses and Half-Timbered History
Penitential crosses dating from the 14th century stand by the village community center on Zamkowa Street. A half-timbered house from the late 18th century formerly served as a school. The village’s history also includes a listed half-timbered residential and farm building, built in 1716 and remodeled in 1730. The crosses and the two buildings represent different chapters in Marczyce’s history; the former schoolhouse and the residential and farm building are two separate structures.
Marczyce’s former role as a summer resort also has a clear place in the timeline. In the 19th century, the village grew in popularity as a summer resort, attracting spa guests from nearby Cieplice. Together with the half-timbered buildings and older penitential crosses, this offers a historical perspective stretching from the 14th century to the village’s development as a summer retreat.
Hiking Trail to Góra Grodna
A blue hiking trail leads from Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój through Marczyce to the 506-meter summit of Góra Grodna and on to Zamek Księcia Henryka. At the summit, about one kilometer east of Marczyce, stands a Neo-Gothic observation tower with battlements. Count Henryk XXXVIII Reuß zu Köstritz had it built in 1806. The trail thus links its route through Marczyce with the summit and the structure there. Check the current trail markings before setting out.
