Discover Wojanów

Wojanów is shaped by two distinct geographical features: its ribbon-like settlement stretches along the Bóbr River, while its eastern part borders the Góry Sokole. The river and the edge of the mountains sit side by side, so the place cannot be reduced to just one landscape theme. This combination offers a practical starting point for planning your trip: you can consider Wojanów as a place steeped in history while also taking its landscape into account. Whether you are more interested in architectural history, the landscape or routes, you can connect those interests with the distinctive features of the place.

River and routes in the landscape

The ribbon-like settlement along the Bóbr River makes Wojanów legible as a long, continuous place. This is a different geographical feature from the boundary between the eastern part of the settlement and the Góry Sokole. If you are interested in the landscape, there are therefore two specific points of reference: the river running alongside the settlement and the mountain edge to the east. Both help you locate Wojanów geographically without reducing it to a single attraction.

A green hiking trail leads from Jelenia Góra via Dąbrowice, Wojanów, Góry Sokole and Bolczów to Janowice. Wojanów is thus part of a clearly named route that takes in several places and landscape features. The sequence makes clear that the trail is not limited to Wojanów: it continues all the way to Janowice. Church and architectural history

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Wojanów was mentioned in 1318; the presbytery was built at that time. This early mention gives the church a clearly dated place in the history of the settlement. Its interior furnishings also offer specific points of interest for exploring its cultural history: they include a Renaissance pulpit and a baptismal font from the early 17th century, as well as three Baroque altars from the 18th century. The elements can be distinguished by period and bring several phases of the church’s furnishings to life. For those interested in culture, the early history of the church building thus connects with later art-historical layers.

Pałac Wojanów and its history

For organised groups, it is important to note the visiting arrangements at Pałac Wojanów: tours take place exclusively in the castle courtyard around the fountain. Booking in advance is required at least one working day before the visit. If you are planning a group tour, be sure to take this requirement into account when arranging your visit.

Pałac Wojanów is also associated with the history of a landscape park designed by Peter Joseph Lenne. Historical records state that the park and the palace once offered a picturesque view of the Karkonosze Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie. This former view adds a historical landscape perspective to the park’s history. It should be distinguished from the geographical features of Wojanów described today: the eastern part borders the Góry Sokole, while the view of the Karkonosze Mountains and Rudawy Janowickie is preserved as a historical description.

Other traces of the place

The former court inn in Wojanów represents a different chapter in the settlement’s architectural history. The building dates from the 19th century. Its ground floor is built of masonry and wood, partly using a timber-frame construction; above it is a half-timbered upper storey. This construction offers a distinct perspective on the place’s historic architecture and differs markedly from the church furnishings and the history of the palace park.

The Jelenia Góra–Wrocław railway line is also part of the area’s historical context. It was routed through Wojanów around 1867 and electrified between 1908 and 1911. The two dates mark different stages in the line’s history and complement the settlement’s religious and architectural past with a historical perspective on transport.
