Early History and Uraz Castle
The settlement of Uraz was first mentioned in 1203. At the time, Henry the Bearded granted the Cistercian convent income from the ducal tavern in Uraz. A castellany in a bend of the Oder near Uraz is also part of the town’s history in the 13th century. It secured the river crossing. These two historical aspects should be distinguished: the first mention concerns the settlement and the granting of income, while the castellany secured a crossing over the Oder.
Uraz Castle tells another story of the town’s architecture. After renovations in the 15th century, it was given the floor plan of an equilateral triangle and surrounded by a moat. The floor plan and moat give the complex a distinctive architectural form, setting it apart from the later buildings on the market square. The castle is privately owned and can be viewed from behind the fence. Before visiting, check whether this access restriction is still in place.
The Church and Historic Buildings on the Market Square
The late Baroque Church of St. Michael the Archangel stands on the market square. The present building was constructed between 1750 and 1789. Next to the church is a Lourdes grotto made of fieldstones. The church and the grotto are two distinct structures: the church is an 18th-century building, while the fieldstone structure is a separate religious site.
Other buildings on the market square reflect different periods and uses. There is a former town hall dating from the late 19th century, which was used as a school after the war. A former rectory from the early 20th century has also been preserved. An evangelical church dating from 1742 once stood on the square; it was destroyed in 1945. The late Baroque church standing there today and the destroyed evangelical church are therefore not the same building. Together, the buildings and their history give the market square several clearly distinct historical layers.
Water Activities on the Oder and at the Lake
Port Uraz offers mooring berths for boat owners. These are subject to the season or operator; if you’re planning a trip with your own boat, check whether a berth is available during your chosen period. If you’re interested in renting watercraft, Miasteczko Portowe has a rental service offering kayaks, sailboats, motorboats, and small and large pedal boats. The availability of individual watercraft may change, so it’s advisable to check current availability before use.
The recreational area by a small lake offers different activities. Facilities there include a shelter, public barbecue areas, and a beach volleyball court. As their condition may depend on local maintenance, it’s worth checking the current situation before visiting. When planning, it helps to note where the activities are located: the marina and watersports equipment rental service are on the Oder, while the recreational area is by the small lake. This lets you distinguish between boating options on the river and the facilities described at the lake.
