Susiec brings together marked hiking trails, river landscapes and local culture. The routes described offer practical guidance for your trip to Poland: the blue Szlak Szumów starts and ends at Susiec railway station. The yellow-marked Szlak Południowy runs from the same station to Narol, passing several named places along the way. This lets you distinguish a circular route from one with a described sequence of stops.
Hiking the Szlak Szumów and the Szlak Południowy
The blue Szlak Szumów is a 17 km circular route. Walking the full route takes about six hours, without taking the suggested shortcut via the yellow trail. This provides a practical guide for planning your day if you want to complete the entire loop.
The yellow-marked Szlak Południowy is about 17 km long. From Susiec railway station, it runs via the waterfall on the Jeleń, the Nad Tanwią nature reserve, Rebizanty, Korkosze and Huta Szumy to Narol. The routes therefore differ not only in their trail markings: an approximate walking time is given for the blue loop, while the sequence of intermediate places provides guidance for the yellow trail.
Waterfalls, woodland and views
On the nearby blue Szlak Szumów, after about a 30-minute walk from the starting point, you reach a 1.5 m-high waterfall on the Jeleń. It is protected as a natural monument. The nearby Nad Tanwią nature reserve protects particularly valuable stretches of the Jeleń and Tanew valleys, with rows of small waterfalls. Established in 1958, it covers about 41 ha and lies at an elevation of about 235 m above sea level.
Another landscape awaits at a wetland along the nearby Szlak Szumów: after about an hour and a half's walk from the starting point, you reach a reed-covered area considered a habitat for birds. From the Susiec observation tower, the view extends across striped fields to the vast Puszcza Solska forest complex. There is a bicycle shelter and benches beside the viewpoint.
Culture in Susiec and the surrounding area
Susiec is home to the historic Church of St. John of Nepomuk. A monument at the entrance to the village commemorates Kargul and Pawlak. If you would like to include historic sites in your plans alongside natural attractions, nearby Wzgórze Kościółek is another place to visit. The hill can be reached on foot from Susiec in about an hour and a half via the blue Szlak Szumów. It is also called Zamczysko and is surrounded by an earthen rampart from a castle complex dating from the 12th to 13th centuries.
A cross and a monument on Wzgórze Kościółek commemorate insurgents and partisans who hid there during the January Uprising and the last war. In Oseredek, the fire service museum displays historic fire pumps, fire engines and uniforms. The cultural attractions in and around Susiec offer a different focus from the waterfalls and forest valleys: they connect you with local memory, history and fire service collections.
