Brody: Baroque Palace, Park and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Brody
Brody can be explored through its palace and park complex and a hiking trail that starts there. The large Baroque Palace defines the complex; “Od Sasa do lasa” begins in the palace courtyard. This links the town’s history with a route through the historic park and along a lakeshore. When planning your trip, it is important to note that the hiking trail’s destination, Jeziora Wysokie, lies outside Brody.
Location between the lakes
Brody lies in the Wzniesienia Gubińskie area between Lakes Nabłocie and Brodzkie. Lake Brodzkie is also part of the route itself: the hiking trail follows its southern shore. The town’s location provides geographical orientation, while the trail takes you along a specific stretch of the water’s edge. If you are considering Brody as a destination, you can use this information alongside the palace complex as points of reference for your planning.
Baroque Palace and building history
The large, two-storey Baroque Palace is the central building of Brody’s palace and park complex. Its building history at this site goes back further: between 1670 and 1674, an older, also two-storey building with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan was constructed there under the Promnitz family. The palace was later built on the site of this predecessor. The information therefore describes two construction phases at one location: the older building, with its dated floor plan, and the Baroque Palace, which defines the complex. Those interested in historic architecture will find a clear chronological reference here, without the buildings being presented as part of a single construction phase.
Tree-lined avenues in the palace park
The historic park features avenues of small-leaved lime trees that cross at right angles, as well as an avenue of horse chestnuts. The surviving trees also include two large sycamore maples, Austrian pines, a weeping beech, American tulip trees and a white oak. Swamp cypresses are also mentioned as exotic trees in the park. The description thus covers both formal avenues and a diverse selection of tree species. During a visit to the park, you can look out for both: the orderly layout of the intersecting lime avenues and the different species that give the historic park its botanical character.
“Od Sasa do lasa” hiking trail
The trail begins in the courtyard of the Brühl Palace in Brody, passes through the historic palace park and follows the southern shore of Lake Brodzkie to the “Na Wąwozach” forest path. The route thus leads from the palace complex through the parkland to the lake. This makes it different from a visit focused solely on the palace and park: the lakeshore section and forest path are explicitly part of the trail described. The forestry authority updated its trail description on June 5, 2024; check the current route before setting out.
Destination in Jeziora Wysokie
In nearby Jeziora Wysokie, the hiking trail ends at the Nature and Forestry Education Center. There, you can learn about various tree and shrub species in the dendrological garden, including, in particular, different kinds of pine. You can also climb a forest observation and viewing tower and take in the surrounding landscape from there. This part of the visit has a different focus from the palace in Brody: it centers on the garden’s trees and shrubs, the tower and the views of the surrounding landscape.
The hike, including a visit to the center and a climb up the tower, is estimated to take about 2.5 hours. This estimate also allows time for these activities at the destination; it is not just a guide to the walking time. If you include the trail in your day’s itinerary, allow for this combination of hiking and time at the center in Jeziora Wysokie. This makes it easier to see how much of your schedule to set aside for the hike and how much for a visit to the center.
