At Jezioro Wieliszewskie: Slope, Lake and Meadows

Wieliszew is located on the slope of Jezioro Wieliszewskie. The lake is a remnant of a former meander of the Narew. From the slope, you can look out over the water and the meadows below. The landscape is therefore more than just a backdrop to a stay: it shapes the character of the place and makes the contrast between the water and the open meadows clear.

You can explore the area around Jezioro Wieliszewskie by bicycle or on horseback. There is also a horse stud directly by the lake. Another cycling option is a one-kilometre paved route along Zalew Zegrzyński: cars are not allowed, and many cyclists and inline skaters use it. The route is relatively short; its paved surface and use by these groups set it apart from simply taking in the lake landscape.

Beach, Cycling Route and Events

The beach in Wieliszew is one of the largest on the lake and was modernised in 2013. Its facilities include barbecue areas, a playground, a pier and toilets. As facilities may change, check the current status before your visit. When planning, you can distinguish between a stay at the beach and the one-kilometre route along Zalew Zegrzyński, rather than treating them as the same offering.

Sports and cultural events are also held at the beach. These include the Amatorskie Mistrzostwa Zalewu Zegrzyńskiego w Siatkówce Plażowej, as well as film screenings, concerts, children’s events and family competitions. Other events include the Wieliszewski Festiwal Folkowo-Szantowy „Szanty nad Zalewem”, qualifying rounds for the competition for the Złoty Pagaj, and the children’s game featuring the mascots of the Komisariat Rzeczny Policji, Kapitan Wyderki. It is called „Bezpieczeństwo nad Jeziorem Zegrzyńskim“. If events are important to your trip, check the dates in advance.

Another date in the local festival calendar is the „Wieliszewskie Wianki“ festival for St John’s Eve (Sobótka). It takes place in Park Świętojański by Jezioro Wieliszewskie. In 2025, it was held on 21 and 22 June; it was announced for the weekend of 20–21 June 2026. For planning purposes, be sure to check the dates for the specific edition.

Chapel, Military Cemetery and Local History

A large Neoclassical cemetery chapel bearing the inscription „Żona Mężowi“ stands in the cemetery in Wieliszew. Maria Gautier funded it in 1834; she was the wife of the then owner of the village and Wieliszew estate. Its architecture, inscription and founding date make the chapel a specific site of local history.

There is also a military cemetery within the cemetery grounds. About 300 Polish soldiers are buried there, most of them members of the 5th Infantry Division. They defended the crossing over the Narew in September 1939. Those interested in the region’s history will find a different perspective on Wieliszew here than by the lake or at the beach.

An earlier chapter in the area’s history dates back to 1387. On 20 July, Ścibor of Radzymin, Bishop of Płock, ordered the construction of a church in Wieliszew on the lands of the Canons Regular of Czerwińsk nad Wisłą in a foundation charter. The observation tower by the Parish of Przemienienia Pańskiego is another landmark in the present-day townscape.
