In Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, you can shape your trip around different interests: Modlin Fortress offers historical perspectives, while the city beach and riverside promenades along the Narew offer ideas for spending time outdoors. Which side you explore first depends on whether you are more interested in the history of the fortress or in walks and time by the water.

Modlin Fortress: History in Specific Places

The defenders of Modlin Fortress held out one day longer than Warsaw during the September Campaign of 1939. A personal historical connection leads to Maciej Kalenkiewicz, one of the co-founders of the Cichociemni: he lived in a building on the corner of Poniatowskiego and Chrzanowskiego streets in the fortress. Poniatowski Gate is also part of the site’s history; it dates from 1836. These events, people and structures offer different ways to explore the past if you would like to consider the fortress’s history beyond a single period.

The “Twierdza Modlin śladami drugiej wojny światowej” walking tour passes through Trzech Kultur Park. In the wider Nowodworski destination, the park presents the history of Modlin’s fortifications through French, Russian and Polish cultures. This offers two different historical perspectives to choose from: a walking tour connected with the Second World War and a park whose theme is the history of the fortifications across these three cultures.

City Beach and Paths Along the Narew

Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki’s city beach has picnic shelters, swings and a designated fire pit. If you would like to swim there, check the local conditions beforehand. The riverside promenades along the Narew are also inviting for walks. This gives you two different ways to spend time outdoors: a visit to the beach and its listed amenities, or a walk along the river.

This distinction may also help you choose where to stay: first consider whether you would prefer to focus your visit on the fortress’s history, the city beach or walks along the Narew.

Getting There and Tourist Information

The wider Nowodworski destination has two railway stations: Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki in the city centre and Modlin. When planning your train journey, check the specific station rather than relying on the place name alone. Modlin station is about 2 km from Modlin Fortress; you can walk there via Mieszka I Street.

The free “T” tourist bus connected PKP Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki and PKP Modlin stations with the city centre and the main sights of Modlin Fortress. It ran on Saturdays and Sundays until August 30, 2026. This stated operating period has ended; for a later visit, check current connections when planning your journey.

The Tourist Information Centre is also located in the wider Nowodworski destination, at its current address of Baśki Murmańskiej 164, formerly Ledóchowskiego 164, in the historic part of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki within Modlin Fortress. Free maps, brochures and other useful materials for tourists are available there. If you plan to visit, check the location and available materials beforehand.

The wider Nowodworski destination lies in the area of three rivers—the Narew, Vistula and Wkra—which supports tourism and recreation. More places to discover: Czosnów, Śniadowo, Kosewo, Smoszewo, Leoncin, Wójtostwo, Wilków Polski, Henrysin.
