The Palace and Its Historic Guests
The palace is three stories high and late Baroque in style. Tylman z Gameren designed the building; it was constructed between 1693 and 1703. These dates give your visit a specific architectural and historical context. The palace is open to everyone and houses the Muzeum Wnętrz.
The history of Otwock Wielki also includes the Bieliński couple, who hosted King Jan III Sobieski and Augustus II the Strong there. The two rulers represent different periods in Polish history. Their visits add a glimpse of the people associated with the place to its architectural history.
Historic Rooms and Collection
The Muzeum Wnętrz displays historic furniture and other furnishings dating from the Baroque period through the Biedermeier era. The collection also includes old musical instruments and mementos of Ignacy Jan Paderewski. It thus brings together furnishings and music history; on your tour, you can see different kinds of historic objects side by side.
A special instrument stands in the ballroom: a Steinway & Sons concert grand piano, made in 1925 and once owned by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The piano links the museum’s musical focus to a specific person and a precisely dated object. The Paderewski mementos in the collection provide a further connection to this particular piece.
The palace’s former private rooms also preserve their own historic details. They contain surviving wall paintings depicting a variety of scenes: ancient ruins, a landscape, and ships, goods and people on a busy coast. The frescoes date from around the turn of the 18th century. Their subjects range from ancient scenes to a bustling coastal setting, adding to the impression created by the furniture and furnishings.
Two Rococo armchairs introduce another theme through their design: they are upholstered with scenes from the fables of Jean La Fontaine. Together with the frescoes, historic furniture and mementos, they offer different points of interest if you are particularly interested in interiors, art or literature.
Summer Concerts and Café
Every year, free classical music concerts are held in the park of the palace and park complex on Sundays in July and August at 5 p.m. This offers a different focus for a summer visit from the museum rooms: here, a shared outdoor music program takes center stage. Check the specific concert dates before your trip if you plan to visit on a Sunday.
The visitor facilities also include the palace café. Cakes are served there, and visitors can view works by artists from the region. The café and art add another cultural dimension alongside the historic rooms, without requiring you to plan around a specific schedule.
The interiors and concert series offer different ways to choose when to travel: the exhibitions, frescoes and historic furnishings are the main focus inside the palace, while the free concert series takes place on Sundays in July and August.
