Węgrów combines sacred architecture and art history with opportunities to relax at the Liwiec Reservoir. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: buildings and art on the one hand, and activities involving water and sport on the other. If you are planning a stay in Poland, you can decide what to see based on which of these aspects you would like to shape your trip most.

Churches, Art and City History

The Minor Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the oldest building in the city. It contains frescoes by Michał Anioł Palloni and the 17th-century painting “Taniec Śmierci” (Dance of Death). Between 1706 and 1709, Palloni created nine large murals in Węgrów’s parish church. In this way, the basilica’s place in Węgrów’s cultural history brings together its status as the city’s oldest building, named works of art and a precisely dated period of artistic activity.

The Post-Reformation complex consists of a monastery and a church dedicated to Saints Peter of Alcántara and Anthony of Padua. Another architectural landmark is the Dom Gdański: this Baroque building dates from the mid-18th century and stands on the north side of Węgrów’s market square. The complex and the individual building offer different starting points for exploring the town’s cultural history.

Smaller details also add to the picture: on Rynek Mariacki, next to the town library, stands the Ławka Mistrza Twardowskiego (Master Twardowski’s Bench). Węgrów is also home to a bell foundry, one of only two in Poland. Together, these offer a range of cultural themes, from sacred art and architecture to public art and bell casting.

Relaxation and Activity on the Liwiec

The reservoir on the Liwiec offers opportunities for relaxation, particularly water sports and other sporting activities. Węgrów’s recreational area includes ten fishing spots and jetties, as well as a 2.3-kilometre cycling path. This caters to a range of interests: cycling and fishing are specifically mentioned, alongside broader opportunities for activities on and around the water.

A kayaking trip on the Liwiec ends in Węgrów, from where you can take excursions into the surrounding area. This gives you two different options when planning your trip: spending time in the reservoir’s recreational area or taking a river trip that ends in Węgrów. Which option shapes your stay more depends on whether you would rather include activities at a recreational area or a route along the river.

Węgrów in Its Regional Context

Within the wider destination of Węgrowski, Węgrów lies in the Liwiec Valley. The river separates the historic regions of Masovia and Podlasie. The Liwiec therefore features in travel planning on two levels: as a reference point for the reservoir’s recreational area and the kayaking trip in Węgrów, and as a river of significance to historical geography. The combination of city history and activities by the water gives you different ways to consider Węgrów as a destination for your trip to Poland.
