Suraż: Cycling Routes, Nature Trail and Kayak Trips
Accommodation in Suraż
When planning a trip around Suraż, there are several ways to explore the area actively: a longer cycling loop, a shorter nature trail and kayak trips on the Narew. The routes differ not only in mode of transport but also in length, course and time frame. You can consider whether to connect several places on a loop, follow a trail from Suraż to Kowale, or plan a trip on the water.
Cycling around Narwiański National Park
The blue-marked cycling loop around Narwiański National Park is 90 km long and passes through Suraż. As a circular route, it connects Choroszcz, Suraż, Łapy and Tykocin. These towns provide clear reference points for planning the route; at the same time, the loop differs considerably in length from the shorter Suraż–Kowale nature trail. If you would like to include several places in your cycling trip, the loop offers a shared route connecting them.
The two routes therefore differ mainly in format: the cycling loop passes through four named places and returns to its starting point, while the nature trail connects Suraż with Kowale.
A nature trail from Suraż to Kowale
The blue-marked Suraż–Kowale nature trail is 8 km long. It leads from Suraż, first along the edge of Narwiański National Park and then beside the Grądówka River to Kowale. The route therefore has two distinct sections: first, the stretch along the edge of the national park, followed by the section beside the river. The nature trail connects Suraż and Kowale.
Kayak trips: one day or several stages
For a multi-day trip, consider the Szlak Wodny Pradoliny Narwi (Narew Valley Ice-Marginal Valley Water Trail). The 90 km kayak route takes three to five days, is unmarked and ends in Suraż. Possible overnight stops along the way include Narew, Puchły, Ploski, Wojszki, Doktorce, Zawyki and Suraż. If you choose this route, it is worth checking overnight accommodation options for your planned stages in advance.
The Active Tourism Center Bajdarka in Suraż also offers one-day kayak trips on the Narew. These trips begin or end at the center. This gives you two different time frames to choose from: a multi-day route that ends in Suraż, and one-day trips that start or end at the center. When planning, check which option suits your intended stay.
Suraż as a base for planning your trip
If you are considering Suraż as a base for your accommodation, it helps to distinguish between the activities according to the role the town plays in each one. The cycling loop passes through Suraż, the nature trail starts there and leads to Kowale, and the multi-day kayak route ends in Suraż. The one-day trips offered by the Active Tourism Center Bajdarka also start or end there. This lets you match the location of your accommodation to the route of the activity you are planning, rather than treating all the routes as similar excursions.
The route length and time frame also offer different options: 8 km on the nature trail, 90 km on the cycling loop, or three to five days on the kayak route. The one-day trips on the Narew are another option. Consider whether you would prefer to include a walk, a cycling loop or a kayak trip in your stay. For the multi-day water route, the places listed are possible overnight stops; for a day trip, the focus is on starting or ending at the Bajdarka center.
