Hajnówka offers insights into Podlasie folklore alongside detailed architectural models. There are also museums devoted to blacksmithing and, in the wider Hajnowski destination, forest and hiking opportunities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing Hajnówka’s cultural attractions from the natural experiences available across the wider destination.

Folklore and Architecture in Hajnówka

The Museum and Cultural Centre of the Belarusian Minority in Hajnówka has three permanent exhibitions on folklore and rural life in Podlasie: “Dzień za dniem,” “Zanim chleb położono na stole” and “Życia zgodny chód.” The exhibitions give a visit a clear thematic focus; specific displays may change.

At the Park Miniatur Zabytków Podlasia, sacred buildings such as Orthodox and Catholic churches stand alongside palaces and wooden buildings. The detailed miniatures are made at a scale of 1:25. Information boards beside the models explain the history of each building and related features. This makes it possible to view and compare different architectural styles at the same scale.

The Museum of Blacksmithing and Locksmithing in Hajnówka offers another perspective on regional craft traditions. It grew out of a family smithy founded in 1927 and has 586 exhibits. During blacksmithing demonstrations, visitors can strike red-hot iron with a hammer themselves; demonstrations are available by prior arrangement.

The Museum and Cultural Centre of Belarusians in Hajnówka also organises craft and art workshops, as well as the recurring ethnographic festivals “Kultura na schodach muzeum” and “I tam żywuć ludzi.” If you are planning your visit around one of these events, check the current programme with the museum in advance.

Forest and Hiking Trails in Hajnowski

In the wider Hajnowski destination, the Białowieża Forest shapes the landscape: it is the county’s main forest complex and is considered Europe’s best-preserved lowland forest in the deciduous and mixed forest zone. Białowieża National Park lies within the forest, in Hajnowski County. It covers 10,500 hectares and was established in 1921.

In Hajnówka, the “Kraina Puszczy i Żubra” Nordic Walking Park has seven marked routes equipped with maps, ranging from 3 to 21 km. One is the “Pętla Żubra,” listed as 15 km with an estimated duration of three hours. This is an estimate; conditions and duration may vary seasonally. The routes start at the water park in Hajnówka or at the “Zwierzyniec” car park on provincial road 689 between Hajnówka and Białowieża. Before setting out, check access and conditions at the starting points, as well as the latest route information.

Different rules apply to different trails in Białowieża National Park. The “Do Dębu Jagiełły” route passes through a strictly protected area and may only be used with a tourist guide licensed by the park director. Independent visitors can use the “Carska Tropina,” “Wilczy Szlak,” “Wokół Uroczyska Głuszec” and “Tropem Żubra” trails, as well as the “Przez trzy zbiorowiska” educational trail, without a guide. Before your visit, check the park’s current access rules.

Culture and Travel Information

Music and living traditions are also part of what Hajnówka has to offer. Since 2002, the International Festival Hajnowskie Dni Muzyki Cerkiewnej has been held as a week-long competition in the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Check the dates of the current edition before your trip. The Szlak Pamięci Hajnówki leads to traces of past cultures and events that have shaped Hajnówka and its residents.

For another perspective on the region, the Hajnówka tourist narrow-gauge railway offers an audio guide in Polish and English. Its topics include the railway, the Białowieża Forest and the forest settlement of Topiło. As this offering may change, it is worth checking whether the audio guide is available before your trip.

When looking for a hotel in Hajnówka, you can first consider whether your trip will focus on the museums and miniature buildings, or whether you would also like to include the nature and hiking opportunities in the wider Hajnowski destination. The listed distances, starting points and access rules are practical details to consider when planning these routes.
