Orzeszkowo: Memorial Site, Church and Routes

Orzeszkowo combines a historic memorial site with an Orthodox church and named routes. The village is home to the Church of the Assumption of the Lord. On the outskirts is the grave of insurgents who were executed in 1863. The tourist trail “Śladami Powstania Styczniowego” runs through Orzeszkowo to this grave.

The blue “Śladami Powstania Styczniowego” trail is 31 km long and begins in the Judzianka district of Hajnówka on ul. Warszawska. From there, it follows Droga Dubińska, crosses the Chwiszczej River and runs through Orzeszkowo, Olszynka and Łozice. The memorial site is thus part of a longer route that includes several places. Important for planning: this tourist trail is not passable by bicycle. Check current trail and access conditions before setting out.
For a cycling trip, another route is relevant: the Hajnówka–Topiło–Hajnówka cycling route also runs through Orzeszkowo and is marked blue along its entire length. The blue markings here do not mean that the tourist trail is also suitable for cycling. These are two differently designated routes, both of which pass through Orzeszkowo. If you would like to visit the church interior, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Białowieża Forest is the largest forest complex in Hajnowski County and is considered Europe’s best-preserved lowland forest in the deciduous and mixed forest zone. The Białowieża National Park lies within the forest. It covers 10.5 thousand hectares and was established in 1921.
In Hajnówka, the “Kraina Puszczy i Żubra” Nordic Walking Park offers a selection of specific routes: its seven marked routes, equipped with maps, range from 3 to 21 km. They start at the water park in Hajnówka or at the “Zwierzyniec” car park on provincial road 689 between Hajnówka and Białowieża. The “Pętla Żubra” is listed as 15 km long, with an estimated duration of about three hours. This provides a choice of shorter and longer routes; conditions and estimated times may vary seasonally. Check current route information and starting points before planning.
The cultural offerings in Hajnówka also feature a range of different attractions. The Museum of Blacksmithing and Locksmithing grew out of a family forge founded in 1927 and has 586 exhibits. During blacksmithing demonstrations, visitors can strike red-hot iron themselves with a hammer; demonstrations are held by prior arrangement. Since 2002, the International Festival Hajnowskie Dni Muzyki Cerkiewnej has been held as a week-long competition in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Hajnówka.
