Hiking and cycling routes with a range of trail profiles
The red-marked Szlak Powstania Styczniowego hiking trail is 24 kilometers long and runs around Siemiatycze. It begins and ends at the former synagogue on Ulica Zaszkolna, which is now the museum and gallery of the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury. If you are interested in a loop trail, this offers a clearly defined route connected to a prominent cultural site in the city.
A longer hiking route is the green-marked Szlak Nadbużańskich Grodzisk. Over 41 kilometers, it runs from Góra Zamkowa in Drohiczyn to Bużyski and passes through localities in the municipalities of Drohiczyn and Siemiatycze. The route is intended for independent travelers and organized groups interested in geomorphology, archaeology, hiking and cycling. The yellow-marked Szlak Kupiecki is also a hiking trail: it starts in Siemiatycze, passes through the municipality of Mielnik and is 40 kilometers long.
For a cycling trip, the green-marked Czeremcha–Mielnik–Siemiatycze cycling route is a useful point of reference. Its 59 kilometers run from Czeremcha via Mielnik to Siemiatycze. In addition, the “Bug Rajem dla Turysty” project includes cycling routes totaling 106 kilometers along the Bug; a 4.3-kilometer section passes through the municipality of Siemiatycze. The different route lengths can help you tailor your trip to your preferred distance, though they do not indicate a particular travel time or level of difficulty.
Forests, water and views of the Bug
The extensive forests in Siemiatycki County invite visitors to pick mushrooms, hike and cycle. Swimming, kayaking and fishing are possible at the region’s large bodies of water. Alongside the marked routes, nature experiences by the water are another option to consider when planning your trip.
In Drohiczyn, Góra Zamkowa is a viewpoint overlooking the Bug valley. Archaeological work there uncovered the ground plan of the castle’s stone foundations. The viewpoint and archaeological site thus offer two different perspectives on the same place: the river valley landscape and its history.
Culture and religious sites
The former Jewish synagogue in Siemiatycze was built in 1797 in the Classical style. Today, the building is part of the Siemiatycki Cultural Center, which also includes the gallery. The gallery has four exhibition rooms with permanent displays, as well as changing exhibitions of painting, graphic art, sculpture, photography and folk art. A visit to the gallery can therefore be combined with an interest in a range of art forms.
The Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Siemiatycze is also a Classical-style religious building, constructed in the 19th century on a plinth with stone foundations. Inside, frescoes draw on Byzantine painting; the furnishings also include an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Visitors interested in religious architecture and art will find a different focus here than in the Cultural Center’s exhibition rooms.
Święta Góra Grabarka is considered the most important religious pilgrimage site for Orthodox believers in Poland. Every year on August 19, believers make a pilgrimage there for the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Spasa. The Samochodowy Szlak Południowego Podlasia driving route runs from Drohiczyn via Mielnik and Święta Góra Grabarka to Topiło, connecting notable places in southern Podlachia.
Mielnik and more places to discover
Chalk mining in Mielnik dates back to the 16th century; the open-pit mine is considered the only active mine of its kind in Poland. Individual visitors can view the site from the lookout point on Ulica Duboisa if access is not possible or they do not have permission to enter. The Nadbużańskie Centrum Turystyki Kajakowej in Drohiczyn displays museum collections on kayaking, old and modern kayaks, as well as multimedia information and memorabilia related to kayaking. In Siemiatycze, the park features a statue of Duchess Jabłonowska and a fountain, on which a nativity scene is set up at Christmas.
