Gawrych-Ruda: Nature Trails and Local History

Animal tracks on the beach boardwalks and an educational trail by the lakes

Each of the two beach boardwalks in Gawrych Ruda features the “Tropy zwierząt” educational trail: animal tracks are embedded in the planks. One boardwalk shows the grey heron, mute swan and mallard, while the other features the wolf, beaver and otter from Wigierski National Park. The two sequences of panels therefore differ not only in the individual species, but also in the groups of animals depicted. If you are interested in the tracks of local wildlife, you will find two clearly distinct themes right on the beach boardwalks.

Nearby, the “Jeziora” educational trail introduces further nature and culture themes. Visitors can learn about forest and wetland habitats, explore the history of Lake Wigry and the differences between lake types, and discover lichens as well as plant and animal species found in the area. Cormorants and other birds can also be observed there. Sculptures from an international art symposium add to the trail’s themes.

The two educational trails have different focuses: the beach boardwalks feature specific animal tracks embedded in the planks, while “Jeziora” combines habitats, knowledge about lakes and nature, observations and art. This lets you choose between a narrowly focused theme by the beach and a broader mix of topics nearby when planning your visit.

Cycling routes with different characteristics

In Gawrych Ruda, the “Wokół Wigier” cycling route climbs the hill to the church, where it turns towards Bryzgiel. The path was converted into a cycling route in 2020. Its described course makes the church a prominent point along the way; from there, the route continues towards Bryzgiel.

Another cycling route, “Do Gawrych Rudy przez dolinę Czarnej Hańczy,” is located nearby. Beyond a small beach and a landing stage, it turns left downhill onto an unpaved path. The path runs close to the lakeshore between holiday resorts and summer houses; from there, you can see Lake Wigry and the opposite shore. As this is an unpaved path, it is a good idea to check the current conditions before setting off. The two routes should not be confused: one leads to the church in Gawrych Ruda and continues towards Bryzgiel, while the other is described in terms of the lakeshore, holiday resorts and views across the lake.

Memorial sites and earlier local history

An obelisk in honour of Pope John Paul II was unveiled at the Church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe on 16 October 2005. The occasion was the 27th anniversary of his pontificate. The monument connects a specific place in Gawrych Ruda with a clearly identified historical date and occasion.

Another glimpse into the history of the locality takes us back to 1668: at that time, the Ruda na Hrudzie (Gawrych Ruda) ironworks belonged to the Suchocki family of ironmasters, who originated from Masovia. This reference to the ironworks and its owners adds an older historical connection to the later memorial sites. Together with the educational trails and cycling routes, it allows you to plan a trip that balances nature observation, activity and local history according to your interests.
