Castle Complex, Museum and Kashubian Culture

Bytów Castle was built between 1398 and 1405 as a border fortress, administrative seat of the Teutonic Order and lodging for knights travelling to Malbork. It stands on a hill overlooking the town. Its original functions brought together military architecture, administration and accommodation in a single complex. Drivers may also be interested in the Szlak Zamków Gotyckich (Gothic Castles Trail): the castle is on this driving route, which passes through twelve places in Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Kashubia.

The Muzeum Zachodniokaszubskie, or West Kashubian Museum, is located in the northern, oldest wing of the castle, the Dom Zakonny, as well as in the adjacent Młyńska and Prochowa towers and the perimeter wall. Its permanent ethnographic exhibition focuses on the material culture of the Kashubians of the Bytów area. It adds a distinct perspective on regional culture to the history of the castle.

The “Muzyka na Zamku” (Music at the Castle) concert series is also part of the museum’s cultural programme. Chamber concerts have been held in the Portrait Hall for many years. During the academic year, professors and students from the Academy of Music in Gdańsk perform there on the first Tuesday of each month. If you are planning to attend a concert, check the date for your travel period.

Buildings from Different Periods

Most nad Borują is a stone railway bridge built in 1884 over the Boruja River in Bytów. It is 20 metres high and consists of six masonry railway bridge piers with semicircular arches made of ceramic bricks. Its height, construction and brick details make it a striking example of local engineering history.

St. George’s Church, also known as Cerkiew Św. Jerzego, tells a different story of architecture. Following renovations in the 1980s, the Protestant church in Bytów became a Greek Catholic church. Its dome is designed in the Byzantine architectural style. Here, a change in religious use sits alongside a clearly defined architectural feature.

The Gothic St. Catherine’s Tower is a remnant of Bytów’s first church. Its three floors display material evidence of the spirituality of former residents of the Bytów region. The tower also offers a viewpoint overlooking the town. Those who want to combine architectural history with views of the town will find another point of interest here.

In the wider destination of Bütow

In the wider destination of Bütow, St. Catherine’s Church in Bytów adds further traces of the past to the history of sacred architecture. Its Gothic tower dates from the first half of the 14th century. The three-aisled hall church was built from 1847 to 1854 to a design by Schindler and modelled on St. Matthew’s Church in Berlin. Its furnishings include an organ from 1854 and two bells from 1820–1821. Also in the wider destination of Bütow, the railway bridge over the Boruja in Bytów is listed as a historic railway monument.

Another attraction in the wider destination of Bütow is Lake Jeleń. It is a lobelia lake in the northern part of Bytów and is used mainly for recreation and tourism. Alongside the buildings, visitors can also explore an explicitly landscape-focused excursion destination and its recreational use.
