Lake, island and the Way of St. James

Mezowo lies on Lake Mezowskie. The lake has an island that was formerly called Ostrów. It is said that an ancient hillfort once stood on the island. This possible historical connection adds another layer to the lake’s story, without turning a cautious tradition into a certainty.

The Way of St. James also passes through Mezowo; the section that runs through the village here is part of the Pomeranian Way of St. James. This offers you a different way to experience the area than its lakeside location: rather than focusing solely on the water, you can also consider Mezowo in the context of a regional pilgrimage route. The lake and the route are two different aspects around which you can plan your trip.

A riding route through the Kashubian Landscape Park

The Modrzewiowa riding route is 7.4 kilometres long and starts at Estancja Mezowo. It runs through the Kashubian Landscape Park.

The local options for planning your trip therefore differ considerably: Ostrów Island is part of the history of Lake Mezowskie, the Way of St. James passes through Mezowo, and the riding route starts at Estancja Mezowo. Depending on which of these connections matters most to you, your stay will have a different focus.

Events and local culture

Dzień Mezowa usually takes place in May or June. It begins with a mass at a chapel on Lake Mezowskie and then continues at the Baśniowy Zakątek kindergarten in Mezowo. The programme includes a communal feast, music, dancing and competitions. Local residents and the local women’s association prepare food for the shared table. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the date of the relevant edition in advance.

Another local music event is Blues Nad Stawem, an annual concert on Kasztanowa Street in Mezowo. Here, too, the specific date is important for planning. The two events offer different reasons to engage with the village: Dzień Mezowa combines a mass with a communal festival programme, while Blues Nad Stawem is billed as a concert.

Local culture also includes a lecture series with Professor Maciej Pawlikowski. It held its eighth edition on 18 July 2026; the meetings are open to the public and free of charge. This provides a recurring lecture format alongside the festival and concert dates. The second Bieg Wikinga was also held in Mezowo on 7 June 2026—a past event date that adds to the range of local events in 2026.

Culture and routes in the wider Karthaus destination

In the wider Karthaus destination, Kartuzy offers additional cultural and landscape themes to consider when planning your trip. The Gothic collegiate church in Kartuzy dates from the 14th century, is one of Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments and is unique nationwide. It bears witness to the activities of the Carthusian Order. One distinctive feature is its Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid, which symbolises the monastic idea with the motto “memento mori.”

The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy presents Kashubian cultural heritage, including literature, material culture, language, and regional history and traditions. The exhibits are housed in eight exhibition halls in the main building. The museum also offers the Bazyli smithy, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions.

For routes by the water, Kartuzy has the Promenada Asesora, a walking and cycling path on Lake Karczemne that is connected to the Ławka Asesora. The bench serves as a viewpoint in Kartuzy. The green Nordic walking route around Kartuzy also starts and ends at the Ławka Asesora; it runs entirely through the forest over hilly terrain and passes close to small forest lakes. These destinations are part of the wider Karthaus destination and should be distinguished from Mezowo’s own features.

Check event dates if a particular festival or concert is a deciding factor, and choose the location of your accommodation according to which of the experiences described matters to your trip planning.
