A wooden church with distinctive architecture

Pomieczyno is home to a wooden church dedicated to Saint Joseph. Its dome-shaped turrets are designed in the old Zakopane style, and the interior features Baroque elements. The exterior and interior therefore offer contrasting architectural details: the turrets stand out in the church’s silhouette, while the Baroque details can be seen inside.

If you are interested in religious architecture, the church gives you a specific reason to include Pomieczyno in your travel plans. Together with the memorial sites, it shows that exploring the village need not be limited to its landscape and routes. The two themes have different emphases: the church draws attention to design, while the memorial sites focus on events from 1945.

Memorial sites commemorating the history of 1945

A plaque on the school building at ul. Kartuska 14 commemorates people who died or were murdered in January and February 1945 during the evacuation march of prisoners from the Stutthof concentration camp. The plaque also thanks local residents for helping and caring for the prisoners. Its text thus records both the victims of the march and the support provided by residents.

Another memorial site is in the parish cemetery, where a mass grave holds 52 victims of the death march. They were prisoners from the Stutthof concentration camp who were murdered in February 1945 during the evacuation march. The victims included about 40 men and about 12 women.

The plaque on the school building and the grave in the parish cemetery both commemorate the death march, but in different ways. The plaque mentions the help and care provided by residents, while the grave focuses on the victims, giving the total of 52 and an approximate breakdown by men and women.

Routes for cycling, hiking and other activities

The Błękitna Trasa Rowerowa is almost 36.5 kilometres long. It starts in Gdańsk Osowa and runs via Chwaszczyno, Tuchomek, Warzenko, Tokary, Kawle Dolne, Trzy Rzeki, Pomieczyno, Hejtus and Kolonia to Sianowo. Pomieczyno is therefore one section of a longer route, not the only place named along the way. When considering the route for your plans, you can take its full course and the order of the places into account.

Another route is intended for hiking and cycling year-round; in winter, it is also designed for cross-country skiing. It runs via Chwaszczyno, Czeczewo-Trzy Rzeki, Pomieczyno, Hejtus and Sianowo. Unlike the Błękitna Trasa Rowerowa, its defining feature is not a stated distance but its intended use in different seasons. The routes should therefore not be treated as identical simply because they both pass through Pomieczyno.

Two other routes offer a different perspective: the equestrian trail following in General Chodowiecki’s footsteps runs between Gdańsk and Berlin via Pomieczyno. The red Nordic walking route passes through Otalżyno Pomieczyńskie and loops around Lake Otalżyno.

Landscape and local setting

The Dębica lake valley runs through Pomieczyno and forms part of local ecological corridors. In the west, part of the village lies within the buffer zone of the Kashubian Landscape Park.
