Rozewie: Lighthouses and Nature

Cliffs, Beech Forest and Bird Migration

The steep cliff in Rozewie, covered with beech trees, has been protected since 1957. The Przylądek Rozewski Protected Landscape Area covers 12.15 hectares. This means the forest on the cliff is not merely a backdrop for the lighthouse, but part of a protected landscape. If you are especially interested in nature, you can also look out for the seasonal changes in bird migration: in spring and autumn, diverse flocks fly over the nature reserve and stop to rest.

The approximately 12-hectare Przylądek Rozewski Nature Reserve is also located close to the lighthouse. It protects a section of the cliff coast, characterized by mixed forest with beech trees, as well as a stand of Swedish whitebeam (Sorbus intermedia). When choosing your excursions, you can therefore distinguish between views of the protected cliff area and the distinctive plant population.

Hiking Trail from the Lighthouse to the Beach

The blue Nadmorski (Rozewski) hiking trail leads to the lighthouse in Rozewie and then descends the high cliff through the Przylądek Rozewie beech forest nature reserve to the beach. The route thus links the lighthouse, cliff, forest and beach in a specific sequence. If you like to spend your days walking, this trail is a useful point of reference for planning; it runs downhill from the lighthouse through the protected area to the beach.

Cyclists will also find a clear route through Rozewie: the 30-kilometre cycling network of the Władysławowo municipality passes through the village and the Przylądek Rozewski Nature Reserve. The cycling routes through Rozewie are connecting sections of the R10 route on the international EuroVelo 10/13 trail. This makes it possible to include the area in a cycling trip without assuming a particular circuit. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether you would rather hike, explore the area by bike or focus on nature observation.

Lighthouses and Museum

The Rozewie lighthouse building houses the Maritime Lighthouse Museum. Its permanent exhibition covers the development of lighthouses from antiquity to the present day; it also features models of several Polish lighthouses and other exhibits. This gives a visit a historical focus that extends beyond the two towers at Rozewie. The lighthouse also contains a memorial room dedicated to Stefan Żeromski; a bust of the writer stands in the square next to the lighthouse.

Rozewie I Lighthouse is also known as Stefan Żeromski Lighthouse and was entered in the register of monuments in 1972. Rozewie II Lighthouse was built in 1874 and entered service on 1 January 1875 to avoid confusion with Czołpino Lighthouse. The two towers thus offer different historical points of reference within Rozewie's lighthouse history.

A Historic Complex and Visitor Information

In addition to the towers, the listed Rozewie lighthouse complex includes a machine house, a fog signal building, two lighthouse keepers' houses and two utility buildings. The complex also includes a smokehouse-bakery, probably dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. The variety of building types makes clear that the historic site encompasses more than the two widely recognizable lighthouses.

There is an important time-related detail to bear in mind when planning a visit: in 2022, both lighthouses were opened to visitors, as were the machine house and the smokehouse-bakery. On 1 May 2022, Rozewie II was opened to visitors for the first time in 112 years. Outside the holiday season, visitors then had to arrange an appointment by phone with the staff to visit either lighthouse. This visitor policy applied in 2022.
