City history and living memory

A special event in the annual calendar is Święto Ogniowe. It is celebrated every year on 11 May to commemorate the great fire that struck Żory on 11 May 1702. If you are interested in local traditions, this festival offers a clear link between an annual celebration and a specific event in the city’s history.

Żory has also preserved its historic street plan, which dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Single-storey townhouses from the early 19th century stand on ul. Murarska; the street was laid out on the foundations of demolished defensive walls. A restored section of the medieval city fortifications can be seen on ul. Ogrodowa and ul. Bramkowa. The Church of Saints Philip and James is another historic landmark: construction began towards the end of the 14th century.

Another historic destination is the restored Pałac w Baranowicach, dating from the 17th century. Its adjoining park is laid out in the English style and features numerous old trees and natural monuments. History and parkland are two distinct aspects of the same place. In central Żory, you will also find a bronze sculpture in the form of a bench. It depicts the Żory painter and professor Fritz August Bimler and was created in the workshop of sculptor Tomasz Wenklar from Tychy.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Muze.ON| Polskie Poznawanie Świata| Żory displays objects relating to the history of the city and region, as well as to non-European cultures. It offers a look at both the local past and ways of life beyond Europe. The Muzeum Ognia takes a different approach: its exhibition includes a film about fire, an activity in which visitors virtually light a fire, various experiments, and tasks and questions for visitors. When choosing cultural attractions, you can therefore weigh up historical and regional topics against an exhibition featuring interactive elements and experiments.

Parks and leisure activities

Park Cegielnia is in the centre of Żory and brings together several activities: a playground with a rope park, a skate park, a roller-skating rink and a traffic garden where visitors can practise cycling. Park Staromiejski on ul. Rybnicka has an eco-friendly playground for children and hammocks for relaxing. The two parks therefore offer different experiences, from active facilities to areas for play and rest.

Leisure options also vary according to your interests. The Aquarion, open year-round, features a current channel, a whirlpool, a wave cave and a climbing wall in the water in its leisure pool. The TWINPIGS amusement park covers more than 10 hectares and includes eight themed areas inspired by American history and culture. The market square is also home to the “Żorzanka” carousel, which has 34 figures and can accommodate more than 70 people per ride.

For a day by the water, consider the “Śmieszek” bathing area. It has two sandy beaches; in summer, kayaks, pedal boats and SUP boards are available to rent. When choosing between a hotel, holiday apartment and holiday home, you can take these different attractions into account: would you like your stay to focus on city history and museums, or would you also like to include parks, leisure activities and summer fun by the water? These options offer concrete points to consider, without requiring every interest to carry the same weight.
