Museum Collections Spanning Art and Everyday History

At the Muzeum Miejskie w Żywcu, different traces of the city's history sit side by side. The exhibition features the Dziejopis Żywiecki by Andrzej Komoniecki, dating from 1704, as well as historic clothing worn by the residents of Żywiec. There is also a collection of guild memorabilia, including obesłania, seals, books and chests. Documents, clothing and guild objects offer different points of interest for visitors curious about written records, city life and craftsmanship.

Among the most valuable holdings of the Muzeum Miejskie w Żywcu are sacred artworks from the Church of the Holy Cross (Kościół Św. Krzyża) in Żywiec: the sculpture Święta Anna Samotrzecia, dating to around 1380, and the tempera painting Opłakiwanie, from the mid-15th century. These are two works from different genres and periods. Their dates and provenance provide concrete points of reference if you would like to focus your museum visit on sacred art.

The historic rooms of the Stary Zamek offer a different perspective. They include a 19th-century Biedermeier salon and the study of Karol Stefan Habsburg from the interwar period. The architectural history of the Pałac Habsburgów adds to Żywiec's historical themes. In 1885, Archduke Albrecht Fryderyk commissioned Karol Pietschka, the Habsburg family's architect, to remodel and add an additional storey to the Pałac Habsburgów in Żywiec. Adding a storey extends a building upwards by one floor; the commission therefore involved both remodelling and an upward extension. This offers a concrete point of interest for anyone interested in the city's architectural history.

By Lake Żywiec and in the Park

In 2018, a more than six-kilometre-long educational trail for pedestrians and cyclists opened along the shore of Lake Żywiec.
