Będzin – Castle, Palace and Paths Through Green Spaces

Discover Będzin through its very different places: a medieval castle, a Baroque-classical palace, traces of Jewish history and paths through protected landscapes. Castle and City History

Zamek Będziński was built in the mid-14th century by King Casimir the Great as a defensive stronghold. The castle remained a ruin until the end of the Second World War; it was rebuilt in 1952. Since 1956, the Muzeum Zagłębia has been housed inside, with an extensive collection of historic weapons. The museum department in the castle offers tours of the building, including the tower.

The city fortifications are also part of Będzin’s history: the city walls were built in the 1360s and connected to the ring walls of the royal castle, which had been built earlier. The area enclosed by the walls was about 7 hectares, and the fortification line was about 1,000 metres long. You can see a reconstructed section of the medieval city wall at the intersection of Zawale and Modrzejowska streets. Będzin received town rights in the 14th century; the castle and walls thus point to the same period in the city’s development.

Palace and Museum

The Pałac Mieroszewskich stands in the Gzichów district. This Baroque-classical palace was built between 1702 and 1714. It has been home to the Muzeum Zagłębia since 1982. The exhibition focuses on the furnishings of the stately first floor: you can see furniture, fireplaces, sculptures and original textiles, as well as decorative arts in silver, porcelain and pewter. The items on display date from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

Two stone sculptures depicting Bacchus and a Bacchante stand in the park west of the palace. They were probably created by Jerzy Leonard Weber in 1718. This cautious attribution is part of their interpretation, alongside the figures themselves: during a visit, you can consider the palace exhibition and these works as different ways of exploring the history of the place.

Jewish History in Będzin

The Dom Modlitwy “Mizrachi” is located in the courtyard of a tenement building at ul. Potockiego 3. The surviving murals depict Jewish iconography, described as the richest in the Silesian Voivodeship. To arrange a visit, contact the museum’s education department: 32 267 77 07, extension 28. The city walls and the castle they were connected to are also part of Będzin’s historical landscape. Views and Paths Through Green Spaces

On Góra Świętej Doroty in the Grodziec district, a viewpoint offers views across the surrounding area. The hill is also home to the Church of św. Doroty, built in 1635; it stands at an elevation of 382 metres. The red Szlak Husarii Polskiej tourist trail passes over Góra Świętej Doroty and begins near Będzin Miasto railway station.

Las Grodziecki is one of three protected landscape areas within Będzin. The red Szlak Husarii Polskiej, a cycle route and a nature trail also run through the forest. The Szlak Świerklaniecki passes through Będzin over a distance of 3.3 kilometres. The green-marked Szlak 25-lecia PTTK hiking trail also runs through the city. The revitalised Wzgórze Zamkowe is a place for learning, recreation, play and relaxation.
