Sarnów: Brick Roads, Village History and a Cycling Route
Accommodation in Sarnów
Sarnów can be explored through several facets: the village’s preserved layout, historic roads and places of remembrance, as well as a regional cycling route. Discovering the area means focusing both on its long-established village character and on tangible traces of its history. For your trip to Poland, this offers several ways to explore Sarnów and its surroundings.
Village Layout and Brick Road
Sarnów has a rare multi-street village layout with an oval-shaped centre; this spatial arrangement has been preserved to this day. The shape of the village is therefore part of its history in its own right. When exploring Sarnów, you can look beyond individual historic sites and take in the broader village landscape too.
One tangible trace of the development of the roads is Główna Street: in 1933, it was surfaced with bricks from the brickworks in Gródków. Nearby, a preserved section of the brick road in Sarnów is also considered one of the few monuments to interwar technical culture. The road and the surviving structure offer different insights into the region’s infrastructure history.
Historic Sites in Sarnów
The church’s history also has a precise date: the Church of the Good Shepherd parish in Sarnów was consecrated by Bishop Adam Śmigielski on 23 October 1994. This detail anchors the church’s history in a specific event and adds to the picture of the area’s older architectural traces.
In 1936, the local government council of Będzin purchased the former estate of the Błeszyński noble family. The Służebniczki Sisters took over the estate and converted the manor house into an orphanage. One stop on the historic walking route through Sarnów is the square in front of the Dom Dziecka im. św. Dominika Savio (St Dominic Savio Children’s Home). The route thus links local history with a named square in the village.
Cycling through Zagłębie
The blue Jeziora Zagłębia cycling route offers another perspective on Sarnów. The 35-kilometre circular route starts at Pogoria IV in Dąbrowa Górnicza, passes through Rogoźnik and reaches Jezioro Przeczyckie. This gives you clear reference points for planning: the starting point, the route and its length.
The route mostly follows paved public roads. Its section between Preczów and Sarnów runs along field tracks. The differing surfaces are important when assessing the route; the stretch between the two villages should not be confused with the predominantly paved route as a whole. The route description lists the cycling route as an addition to the regional cycling map in 2024. As surfaces can change, it is worth checking the current route before setting out.
Local Music and Culture
The vocal ensemble “Zagłębianki” was founded in Sarnów in 1976 and is the oldest folk ensemble in the Psary municipality. Its local repertoire includes the songs “Jestem Sarnowianka” and “Pod sarnowskim lasem”. Their titles make the connection to Sarnów immediately apparent in the music.
Another piece of the area’s history is the former community centre, which now houses the cultural centre and the volunteer fire brigade station. Together with the historic walking route, the village layout and the roads, these places tell different parts of Sarnów’s story. This lets you get to know the village not only through individual dates, but also through its spatial and cultural connections.
