Dąbrowa Górnicza combines a lake landscape, nature trails and traces of industrial history. The four Pogoria lakes are used for tourism and recreation; there are also protected landscapes, cycling and hiking trails, museums and historic churches. This lets you choose different themes for your trip: time by the water, exercise in nature or insights into the region’s history.

Pogoria: Lakes and Trails

The four lakes make up the Pojezierze Dąbrowskie. Marked walking and cycling routes run around each of them and are also suitable for younger children. One specific route option is the green-marked Szlak XXV-lecia: it leads to the waters of Pogoria II and Pogoria III and runs for about 18.5 kilometres within Dąbrowa Górnicza. Sailing and windsurfing are suitable activities on the water at Pogoria III.

Pogoria II also has natural significance: 84 vertebrate species occur in one area of the lake, 52 of which are strictly protected. The trails and waters offer different experiences—the marked routes provide access to the lakes on foot or by bike, while Pogoria III is associated with sailing and windsurfing. If you are planning a trip, check the current conditions on trails and boardwalks before your visit, as these can change.

Nature Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

Wzgórze Gołonoskie is legally protected as a natural and scenic complex. The red-marked Szlak Metalurgów is 13 kilometres long and leads to several different destinations: the historic church on Wzgórze Gołonoskie, former quarries, an old lime kiln and sites of former clay pits. These destinations connect natural and industrial history without limiting the route to just one theme.

Zielona Park covers 67 hectares and is home to the largest concentration of oaks in the Dąbrowa Basin. Another landscape is the Błędów Desert, also known as the “Polish Sahara”: a substantial part lies within Dąbrowa Górnicza, and the desert is the largest inland dune complex in Central Europe. The yellow-marked Szlak Pustynny PTTK is 28.5 kilometres long. It starts in Błędów and runs through the desert area from Mount Jałowce to Ryczów. This allows you to compare different landscape impressions through two routes described in different ways.

At the documentation site on Wzgórze Srocza Góra in Strzemieszyce, there is an educational trail and information boards. In the wetlands, a network of boardwalks leads to places that would otherwise be inaccessible. These paths supplement the longer routes with opportunities to observe nature and shorter sections to explore on foot; the condition of the boardwalks can change.

Museum and History

Muzeum Sztygarka presents the region’s industrial history and traditions, as well as the everyday lives of miners and steelworkers. Archaeological finds on display include pieces from the early medieval production settlement in Łośniu, where lead and silver were smelted. The museum’s local ethnographic collection also explores the folk culture, folklore and customs of the Dąbrowa Basin. The same museum thus gives attention to both the history of work and industry and regional traditions.

Another historic landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Anthony in Gołonóg, founded in 1675. If you would like to combine culture and landscape, the city offers a range of themes: the history of mining and steelmaking, the customs of the Dąbrowa Basin and historic churches alongside lakes and nature trails.

Visits within the wider destination

Other places in Dąbrowa Górnicza also offer specific cultural and scenic points of interest. Advance registration is required for a visit to Pałac Kultury Zagłębia. The palace was entered in Poland’s National Register of Historic Monuments in 1979 as an outstanding example of Socialist Realist architecture.

A reservation is required to visit Kopalnia Ćwiczebna. Pre-booked tickets must be collected from the museum ticket office 15 minutes before the scheduled entry; children over six may visit the site when accompanied by an adult. The exhibition shows how mid-level mining personnel received practical training, including at mechanical and electrical engineering stations and in mine-workings support. Check the relevant conditions before planning these visits so that you can take registration and reservation requirements into account.
