Urban history and industrial traces

The Muzeum Śląskie tells the story of Upper Silesia in its permanent exhibition “Światło historii. Górny Śląsk na przestrzeni dziejów,” from the earliest times to the political transformation of 1989. This broad historical scope puts the region’s development at the centre. Kościuszko Park, Katowice’s oldest city park, is home to the wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel, dating from 1510. In Katowice, you can thus encounter different historical perspectives: a wide-ranging regional history and a specific building with a clearly established date.

The former mining settlements also tell the story of the city’s development. Nikiszowiec was built between 1908 and 1927 to designs by Emil and Georg Zillmann. Since 2011, the historic miners’ settlement has been on Poland’s list of monuments of history. Giszowiec offers a different perspective: the garden-city settlement was built between 1907 and 1910 for employees of the “Giesche” mine. Its workers’ houses were modelled on old Upper Silesian country houses. In Giszowiec, the Izba Śląska Gawlikówka displays paintings by Edward Gawlik. Industrial history can also be read in individual buildings. Fabryka Porcelany is part of the Route of Technical Monuments. Walcownia – Muzeum Hutnictwa Cynku is a historic post-industrial building with a rolling mill and steam engines dating from 1903. Galeria Szyb Wilson offers a different focus: it is a contemporary art gallery in a revitalised building that once housed the pithead building and bathhouse of the Wilson shaft at the “Wieczorek” mine. Nature and outdoor activities in Katowice

The Las Murckowski and Ochojec nature reserves are located in Katowice. Las Murckowski was established in 1953 and later expanded; it now covers more than 100 hectares. It includes the slopes of Wzgórze Wandy, the highest point in Katowice. Together, the two protected areas give nature a place in the cityscape.

For active pursuits, Dolina Trzech Stawów offers an almost four-kilometre roller-skating route, cycling and running routes, kayak hire, and a landscaped beach with a bathing area. At the watersports facility near Camping MOSiR, boats, kayaks, pedal boats and surfboards are available. Seasonal availability may vary, so check before making plans. This area of the city offers a choice of activities both on land and on the water.

Environmental education is another focus: the Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej in Katowice-Murcki includes three workshops, a kiln for clay and a nature area. From the former “Warszawa II” mine shaft, you can take in views of the Strefa Kultury and the city panorama. Whether the shaft is currently accessible depends on museum operations.
