Uniejów: Castle, city history and spa zone
Accommodation in Uniejów
In Uniejów, architectural history, religious art and paths through the spa zone come together. The castle and collegiate church tell different chapters of the town’s history; a historic town trail, a landscape park and leisure facilities complete the picture. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on historic buildings or on paths and facilities in the spa area.
Castle and collegiate church: architectural history in Uniejów
The Castle of the Archbishops of Gniezno is a well-preserved 14th-century summer residence of the archbishops. It is also one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval fortifications. Both descriptions draw attention to different aspects of the same building: its function as a residence and its defensive architecture. If you are interested in medieval buildings, the castle offers a concrete starting point for exploring these aspects together.
The Collegiate Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary also offers a glimpse of historic architecture. The Gothic church was built in 1349; its chancel retains a 14th-century rib vault. The church is also home to the tomb of Saint Bogumił, commissioned in 1666. The tomb consists of black marble and bears a reclining bronze figure of the saint in episcopal vestments. The church building and the tomb offer two different points of interest: the surviving Gothic architecture and a particular work of art with its own history of patronage.
Castle park and geothermal water
An English landscape park was laid out around the castle between 1860 and 1870. It was created by the owners at the time, the Toll family. The town’s history therefore extends beyond the medieval castle: the design of its surroundings is also one of Uniejów’s distinctive historic features.
Another feature is the geothermal water. It is almost 70°C and is extracted from a depth of 2 km.
Paths and leisure facilities in the spa zone
The spa zone includes a therapeutic footpath, a combined walking and cycling path, and a kayak launch. The facilities cater to different kinds of leisure activities, from walking and cycling to activities connected with the water. If these facilities are important to your plans, check local access conditions before your visit.
The “Bulwary Nadwarciańskie” promenade connects leisure facilities in the spa zone. Near the beach and the castle, it has been extended with floating piers. The historic “Uniejowskie korzenie” town trail has a different focus: it passes the most important historic buildings in Uniejów. For orientation, it is therefore worth considering whether you would prefer to focus on paths in the spa area or on a route along historic buildings.
Together, these places and paths offer different perspectives on Uniejów without prescribing a set order for your visit: the castle, church and tomb represent architectural and art history; the park and spa zone complement these themes with landscape and leisure. You can choose the features that best suit your planned stay.
