Ratibor (Polish: Racibórz) combines the Oder with historic churches, castle history and green spaces. When planning your trip, you can focus on a seasonal water-based experience, cultural sites or nature: kayak trips start at the city beach, while the arboretum and the nearby Łężczok nature reserve reveal other sides of the destination. The historic sites also provide specific points of interest for a culture-focused stay. When planning, it is worth distinguishing permanent attractions from seasonal activities and event dates.

The Oder, the arboretum and the nature reserve

Kayak trips on the Oder are available during the season. The starting point is the city beach in Zamkowy Park. If you would like to plan a paddling trip, check in advance whether it is currently operating; the trips are a seasonal activity and are not listed as available year-round.

At the Bramy Morawskiej Arboretum, you can walk in the forest and visit the Zaczarowany Ogród, which is open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk. This gives you the option of a forest walk and a garden visit alongside a seasonal experience on the water. The Zagroda żubrów site in Racibórz-Brzezie covers more than ten hectares and was created specifically for European bison.

Another nature destination lies a few kilometres from the city centre: Łężczok Nature Reserve was established in 1957 to protect a species-rich riparian forest and former Cistercian fishponds. Its location nearby adds an area with its own conservation history to the destination’s green spaces. This makes it possible to plan visits to urban sites and nature areas separately, without conflating them as a single attraction.

Churches, the castle park and the museum

The Church of St James (św. Jakuba) was built between 1246 and 1258 as the monastery church of the local Dominican convent. The Church of the Holy Spirit (św. Ducha) was consecrated in 1334 as a church for Dominican nuns; a nuns’ gallery has been preserved there. The different dates and original functions make the two churches distinct stops in the history of the Dominicans in Racibórz.

The Church of the Holy Spirit is the main exhibition building of the Muzeum w Raciborzu. Check visitor access before your visit. The museum also uses two historic buildings: the former Dominican convent on ul. Gimnazjalna and a granary on ul. Chopina. These two locations add different historic architectural forms to the museum’s facilities.

Zamkowy Park is part of a castle complex that includes a castle dating from the 13th or 14th century, a chapel from 1290 and a gatehouse from the 13th and 14th centuries. Remains of the defensive walls have been preserved on the western side. The construction dates mentioned therefore span several centuries. The Zamek Piastowski in Racibórz also includes the Chapel of St Thomas Becket (pw. Tomasza Becketa), known as the “Pearl of Silesian Gothic.”

On the Market Square stands the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny), whose origins date back to the 12th century. There is also a statue of the Virgin Mary on a column in the centre of the square, erected between 1725 and 1727. Together with the churches and the castle complex, these sites form a cultural focus that can be explored through specific buildings and their different construction dates.

Recurring cultural events

Regular cultural events in Racibórz include Dni Raciborza in June, the Festiwal Górnej Odry, Pływadła, the Raciborski Festiwal Średniowieczny, the autumn travel festival “Wiatraki,” and the Konwent Miłośników Fantastyki i RPG Goblikon. Dates and schedules may vary. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates in advance. This lets you combine a stay focused on permanent cultural sites with attendance at a time-specific event, without confusing the two types of travel experience.
