The Nowe Chechło colony and its history
The Nowe Chechło colony was founded in 1776 by the Donnersmarck family from Świerklaniec. The specific founding year anchors the town’s history to a clearly defined date. In the 1960s, backfill sand was extracted from the site of today’s Nakło-Chechło Reservoir. It was used in hard-coal mines to fill exhausted workings. After extraction ended in 1968, the authorities of Tarnogórski County decided to create a large body of water at the disused sand pit as a sports and recreation centre. The history of the nearby reservoir therefore comprises two clearly distinct phases: resource extraction and the decision to later use the site for recreation. This gives your visit a specific historical context for the body of water you see today.
Leisure by the water and seasonal information
Swimming, fishing, kayaking and sailing are listed as leisure activities at the nearby Nakło-Chechło Reservoir. During the season, electricity, running water, toilets, changing rooms and shower facilities are available in the camping area at the nearby Nakło-Chechło Reservoir. During the summer season, there is a supervised bathing area at Pole Biwakowe. Before your trip, check whether the summer season coincides with your stay.
Getting around by bicycle and on foot
Two Metrorower stations are listed in Nowe Chechło: on ul. Lasowicka, opposite the primary school, and on ul. Rekreacyjna, by Pole Biwakowe at the Nakło-Chechło Reservoir. Station details may change; check them before planning a ride.
A black hiking trail in the surrounding area runs from Nakło Śląskie to Jezioro Nakło-Chechło. The route has clearly named endpoints and offers a different perspective from the activities on the water: rather than swimming or boating, the focus is on the route between the starting point and destination. You can therefore think of it as a hiking option in its own right, alongside the reservoir.
