You can get to know Brzeźnica through tangible traces of its history and two different routes. The parish church of St John the Baptist combines an early 20th-century building with older furnishings. A cemetery chapel and a barrow cemetery offer further historical perspectives. If you would like to include some activity in your travel plans, you can choose between a blue lowland trail and a cycling loop. This places cultural heritage and active exploration side by side as distinct areas of focus.

A church with several layers of history

The parish church of St John the Baptist was built in 1905–1906 to a design by Sławomir Odrzywolski; Bishop Leon Wałęga consecrated it in 1907. Its furnishings include an 18th-century wooden baptismal font and a side altar from the second half of the same century, bearing a carved crucifix. There are also paintings of St Stanislaus and St John the Baptist, likewise from the 18th century. The church thus brings together different historical periods: the building dates from the beginning of the 20th century, while some of its furnishings are considerably older. If you are interested in church and art history, you can use this chronology as a guiding thread rather than viewing the church solely in terms of its construction date.

Chapel and barrow cemetery

The cemetery chapel in Brzeźnica is a brick building dating from 1841. The archaeological barrow cemetery in Borek Forest offers a glimpse into an even earlier period: it dates from the 11th–12th centuries. Of the 21 barrows originally there, about 12 remain today. The church, chapel and cemetery thus represent different periods in the history of the area. The barrow cemetery also offers tangible evidence that the local past is not limited to more recent church buildings. If you explore Brzeźnica’s historical traces, you can distinguish between the different places and periods without grouping them together as a single monument.

Explore on foot or by bike

A 15 km blue lowland trail leads from Dębica to Góra Śmierci. In Brzeźnica, the route passes the cemetery chapel, the memorial mausoleum and the church of St John the Baptist. If you are planning a walk, you will therefore find several historical landmarks along the way that also play a part in the area’s history. Check the local condition of the route before setting out.

Another option is a cycling loop in the municipality of Dębica, which runs from Pustków-Osiedle through Kochanówka, Skrzyszów, Paszczyna and Brzeźnica, returning to Pustków-Osiedle. The two routes differ in their layout: the blue trail leads from Dębica to Góra Śmierci, while the cycling route returns to its starting point. This lets you choose a tour based on the kind of route you prefer, without treating the two as the same. If you plan to ride the cycling loop, check the local route information before setting out.
