Lesko is an interesting destination for travelers looking to combine local history, scenery and active days on a trip to Poland. The town lies on the banks of the San, on the slope of Baszta. From the hills around Lesko, views extend across the San Valley and the Gór Słonnych Landscape Park to Smerek and Połonina Wetlińska. The townscape is complemented by historic buildings, a garden with old trees, and opportunities for cycling and climbing.

Hilly landscapes and trails around Lesko

The garden in Lesko preserves remnants of former woodland in ravines and on slopes. These include imposing pedunculate oaks, large-leaved lindens and elms that are several hundred years old. Its distinctive character lies not only in the individual tree species, but also in the terrain where these remnants have survived. In contrast to the distant views across the San Valley, the focus here is on the old trees and slopes.

From Lesko, you can set out on a 54-kilometer cycling tour around the Góry Słonne mountain range. The Lesko municipality also has “Extreme – Bieszczady” off-road cycling trails that follow forest and country roads. These offer different points of comparison when planning a ride: the length of the loop and its route around the mountain range, on the one hand, and the surface of the off-road trails, on the other. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

From the center of Lesko, you can take a walk of about an hour to Kamień Leski. The actual walking time depends on the route you choose. Kamień Leski is a striking natural attraction and is especially popular with climbers. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Historic buildings and Jewish heritage

Kmita Castle was built in the 16th century on a high escarpment above the San. From one side, it recalls a medieval fortress; from the other, it resembles a Renaissance residence. Two distinctly different architectural impressions thus come together in one building.

The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates to around 1530. It was built of rubble stone on a Latin cross plan. The plan describes the layout, while the rubble stone identifies the building material—two distinct features that define the structure.

The synagogue in Lesko was built between 1626 and 1654 in the Mannerist-Baroque style. It was constructed of river pebbles, dressed stone and brick. The former synagogue houses the Muzeum Żydów Galicji and the Galeria Bieszczadzkiej Grupy Twórców.

Lesko’s Jewish heritage also includes the cemetery, which dates to the turn of the 17th century. Its matzevot are well preserved. Together with the synagogue, it provides another historic point of reference alongside the Renaissance-era buildings.
