In Będziemyśl, tangible traces of architectural and religious history meet a castle site and a Polish pierogi tradition. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: you can explore architecture and historical objects, compare archaeological dates or take an interest in local food culture.

Church architecture and sacred details

The parish church of św. Jacka in Będziemyśl was built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1919–1921. Neo-Gothic architecture revives forms of medieval Gothic at a later date. Gothic and Neo-Gothic therefore do not mean the same thing as a specific year of construction: the style refers to an older architectural vocabulary, while the construction years give the actual period when the church was built. If you are interested in architecture, this distinction is a useful way to explore the history of the place.

Near the parish church stands a stone figure of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 18th century. It therefore comes from a significantly earlier century than the church building. A bell in the bell tower beside the parish church also has its own date and place of origin: it was cast in Berlin in 1833. When comparing the dates, it is worth matching each one to its object: the 18th century refers to the figure, 1833 to the casting of the bell, and 1919–1921 to the construction of the church.

Zamczysko and archaeological traces

The Zamczysko castle site lies in the southeastern part of the village, on Winnica Hill; remains of an earthwork survive there and are believed to date from the 15th century. Unlike the church, it has no precise construction date, only a probable dating. Zamczysko thus offers an archaeological perspective on the history of the place: the earthwork remains and the site on a named hill distinguish it from the church and sacred objects. When comparing architectural history and archaeological traces, the difference between a precise construction date and a tentative dating is important.

Village centre and pierogi

The Będziemyśl Jubilee Cross stands in the village centre and is more than 15 metres high. Unlike the church and castle site, its specific size rather than a historical date takes centre stage. The locations also set these landmarks apart: the cross stands in the centre, while Zamczysko is in the southeastern part of the village, on Winnica Hill.

The Piknik z Pierogiem offers another perspective. At its 12th edition in Będziemyśl, held on 28 July, 13,000 pierogi were offered in three varieties. Pierogi are filled dumplings from Polish cuisine. If you would like to plan a trip around the picnic, check the date of the edition you want to attend.

The church, figure and bell differ in their construction date, age and origin; Zamczysko brings in a probable dating. The picnic follows a different timeline, as it is tied to the date of a particular edition of the event.
