Rękusy lies in the southern part of the Ełk Lake District, which forms the central part of the Masurian Lake District. The surrounding lakes and tangible traces of the village’s history both help to put the place in context. A hiking trail runs through Rękusy; the historic memorial sites on Góra Pilchowa and in Bartosze lie in the wider region. This makes it possible to distinguish local history, the landscape, and regional destinations for excursions.

Lakes near Rękusy

Lake Mołdzie is 2.5 km from Rękusy. Lepaki (Lepaki Małe) is 3 km away, Guzki 3.5 km, Sunowo (Sanowo) and Szarek 3.8 km each, and Chrzanowo 4.2 km from Rękusy. Of the lakes listed, Mołdzie is the closest and Chrzanowo the farthest; the difference between the two distances is 1.7 km. This connects Rękusy’s location in the wider Ełk Lake District with a clear ranking of the surrounding lakes by distance. For your trip planning, this combination offers different points of reference rather than describing the landscape solely by the name of the lake district.

Local history: from settlement charter to school building

One historical reference point is the year 1494, when Rękusy received a settlement charter under Magdeburg law. In connection with this, Commander Rudolf von Tippelskirchen granted Marcin Rękus, also known as Matz Ranckus, 7.5 łans of land. The date, the people involved, and the size of the grant make this a specific milestone in the village’s history.

Another point of reference is the former school building, dating from 1926. The brick building has been renovated and remodelled several times. These two details represent different aspects: a historical land grant on the one hand, and a building formerly used as a school on the other. If you would also like to understand Rękusy through its history, you can compare a milestone from the late 15th century with a building from the 20th century.

Hiking trail and a one-off birdwatching trip

The “Zabytkowe cmentarze” hiking trail runs from Stare Juchy via Liski, Grabnik, Rogale, Guzki, Mołdzie, Ruska Wieś, Góra Pilchowa, Rękusy, and Bartosze to Ełk. In this order, Rękusy lies between Góra Pilchowa and Bartosze. If you include the trail in your plans, check its current condition and route in advance.

A one-off ornithological trip held as part of the European Bird Days was a separate event. On 6 October, the Centrum Edukacji Ekologicznej and the Klub Miłośników Ptaków jointly led the tour along the route Ełk – Rękusy – Ruska Wieś – Rogale – Lake Sawinda – Lake Sunowo – Ełk. It lasted 3.5 hours and was attended by twelve people. Unlike the hiking trail, whose route is described above, the birdwatching trip was a single historical event, not a recurring programme item.

Historic memorial sites in the wider region

On Góra Pilchowa, graves of German and Russian soldiers who died during the fighting from 1914 to 1918 lie hidden among the trees. In Bartosze there is a cemetery dating from the Second World War. The remains of more than 24,000 soldiers and civilians rest there; it is the largest cemetery of its kind in Warmia and Masuria.

The two sites differ in period and scale: Góra Pilchowa has graves from 1914 to 1918, while Bartosze has a cemetery containing the remains of more than 24,000 people from the Second World War. They add another historical perspective on the region to Rękusy’s settlement and architectural history.
