Old Town and history

The historic street plan shapes Elbing’s Old Town. Its attractions include St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Galeria EL Art Centre and the Market Gate. A bailey, a monastery and hospital complex, reconstructed townhouses and the distinctive Ścieżka Kościelna are also part of this historic cityscape. This variety offers different ways to explore the city, from religious architecture and reconstructed townhouses to a special part of the Old Town known as Ścieżka Kościelna.

An observation platform is located in the tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral. It can be visited from 1 May to 30 September 2026. If you would like to include this in your plans, schedule your visit within this period. The limited season is especially worth noting if you are travelling around the turn of autumn.

Art in many forms

The Galeria EL Art Centre primarily presents and creates contemporary art. Its programme includes exhibitions, concerts, performances, theatre productions and film screenings. The building itself is a two-aisled former Gothic Dominican church in the Old Town. If you are interested in art and architecture, you can find both in one place: the building’s former religious use and its present role as an art centre stand side by side, without one replacing the other.

You can also encounter art throughout Elbing. The “Otwarta Galeria” comprises more than sixty spatial artworks. In addition, several dozen works from the first and second Biennale Form Przestrzennych are spread across the city. Both offer a sense of how art plays a role beyond the exhibition space. If you would rather focus on individual works and locations than centre your visit solely on an art centre, these works distributed throughout the city offer another way to experience it.

The Archaeological and Historical Museum dedicates its “Truso – legenda Bałtyku” exhibition to the Viking-era trading settlement of Truso, founded on the shore of Lake Truso. This historical topic complements the impressions of the Old Town and its art. The exhibition focuses on the history of a settlement and offers another point of interest for visitors curious about the region’s past.

Bażantarnia: forest park and trails

Bażantarnia is a forest park and an important recreation area in Elbing. Activities include hiking, horse riding and cycling; in winter, the forest trails are suitable for cross-country skiing. When planning your trip, you can choose between focusing more on the city’s history and spending time in the forest. There is a specific seasonal distinction to bear in mind: cross-country skiing is a winter activity, while hiking, horse riding and cycling are listed as activities in the park.

A range of route descriptions is available to help you find your way on hikes. The blue loop trail runs through Bażantarnia Forest Park. The Kopernikus red trail follows the Srebrny Potok along its section in Bażantarnia, passes the Elewów Bridge and Parasol, and continues via Góra Jagiellońska to the car park by the forestry lodge in Dąbrowa. These details help distinguish a specific route from a general visit to the forest park.

The Elbląg Canal also offers a different perspective on your stay: a trip can begin in Elbing’s Old Town.
