Rychliki: Church history and cycling route along the Elbląg Canal

Rychliki can be explored through two different interests: the history of its church and a green cycling route that passes through the village. There is also a protected Evangelical cemetery and a stretch of woodland nearby. Church and local history

The present-day Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rychliki was built between 1875 and 1877 under Pastor Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski. Grzybowski furnished the church with most of its fittings, which he made himself. Both the construction period and the pastor’s work are therefore part of the building’s history. The church is included in the register of monuments and the monuments inventory.

Another milestone in local church history came in 1947, when an independent parish was established at the church. Rychliki is also connected with an older linguistic history. In the 17th century, sermons were preached here in Polish. These details offer different perspectives on the village: the construction of the present-day church in the 19th century, the later establishment of the parish, and sermons from an earlier century.

The sculpture “Head of Christ with a Crown of Thorns” by Wilhelm Gottfried Grzybowski, dating from 1853, is kept in the rectory. The date belongs to the sculpture and predates the construction of the present-day church between 1875 and 1877. Cemetery and nearby woodland

A protected Evangelical cemetery dating from the first half of the 19th century is a distinct historical landmark in Rychliki. It dates from a different period than the later-built present-day church and adds another site to the picture of local history. Rychliki was also founded on 1 January 1310 in a wooded area. Part of this woodland has survived nearby. The founding date and the remaining woodland thus relate to two different aspects: the village’s early history and its wooded surroundings.

Cycling through Rychliki

The green cycling route along the Elbląg Canal passes through Rychliki and connects Elbląg with Iława.
